I get a similar noise on my car. Only when cold, I would best describe it as a "moaning" noise or a far away foghorn (does that make sense?) and only when turning the wheel to the left. Probably the cables in the cable reel, or cable reel related?!?! Sounds like it is something on the steering column directly underneath the gauges.

when the e46 used to get the moaning sound it was the bearings in the power steering pump, bmw changed the pump ,could be low or to much oil in the reservoir which is why it only does it when cold, oil would be under pressure, the rubbing sound could be the arch liner rubbing the tyre, turn full lock & check the front of the liner if catching you will see rubbing mark on the plastic liner, there is a updated liner with a indent in it to clear the tyre

Same issue. Really annoying. Definitely coming from steering column inside car. Cant hear it outside the car. We hit high 80's-90 this week and it didn't go away with the warmer temps.

I was getting the squeak when it got super cold here in Chicago. Fixed it by changing steering wheel position. Seemed to fix it for me.

Nope. Adjusting height or extension of steering column doesn't change it.

Have this issue as well. Looking online, seems like I need to take the dash apart and get to the steering wheel column and use white lithium grease on some parts.

my first US spec 1M had it very slightly, my Canadian one doesn't. Probably the Americans are the squeaky wheel? : )

I just read this post. Never noticed this issue in my 6 years of ownership. Fortunately It will be awhile before I drive my 1M again and I hope to have forgotten about this thread. Usually I'm thrilled for the mechanical feel after driving my EPS X1.

I never worried much about it. It was just a tiny periodic sound like others that the car makes when cold. Yours probably doesn't have it like my current one. Yes there is nothing that makes you appreciate the steering more than driving the new cars.
