Well chalk me up for trying to think outside the box...ermmm instructions.
Already frustrated at how much had to come off to install my SSK, I decided to try and just change the shift lever and new plastic cup. It bolted right up just fine, I could shift into every gear...at least till I started moving. I now realized why BMW supplies a replacement arm....to give maybe 0.25" clearance to the driveshaft. Gonna have to drop everything again later this week.

in 2nd, 4th and 6th it rubbed on the driveshaft...R, 1, 3 and 5 no problems. This was not detectable until the car was in motion and load introduced.
I suspect the new arm raises and gives you about 0.25" of clearance once installed and in the affected gears.

Maybe this will help. Someone did this without having to jack the bottom up and remove bottom parts but it does seem more fiddly

trust me, you cannot change out the shifter on the 135i from the top. It is impossible, believe me I tried. The shifter in those pics moves up and away enough to see the clip that holds the lever to the linkage......there's not as much "play" on the 135i to move the lever enough to see the clip from above. Plus, it's a different clip that can't simply be pulled off, it's a locking style clip that has to be pryed up and out at the same time.

I installed an Evolution 3 SSK in my car. I normally take pictures of everything, but I was too pissed off.
I didn't have to drop my exhaust, but I had to remove my gearbox brace. I also had to cut an allen wrench very short to tighten the screws around the new metal cup that holds the shifter pivot ball. They made the kit with a different linkage piece in mind, so i needed to machine two parts down. There's also a piece that holds the shift cup that holds the ball. My kit included two replacement pins for that, but it was so much of a pain in the ass to get to that I didn't bother. I may go back and drop my exhaust now that I have Torx sockets. It took me 3-4 hours and took a week to break in. It feels great now. |

lol, that was pretty much my state of mind as well. And imagine my frustration, when I didn't particularly care for the increased effort of the SSK I chose, that I had to do it all over again to take it out

I've got the BMW factory instructions...if you want I can scan and post them. They actually call for dropping the drive shaft to get to the new carrier...took mine to BMW for $250 and let them deal with it warranty wise should something happen down the road...money well spent...no bloody knuckles at least...

Awesome! Thanks Formel1!!!!!
I've got little excuse now. Just need to find TIS 25 11 211 & TIS 25 11 245 & have a go. Does anyone know the spec of the "standard BMW lubricant" they refer to? Cheers, Tim.

Just fitted mine, on my 130i, all from above and it took about an hour, most of which was trying to work out how to remove the white collar to gain access to the circlip! The secret was in the technique of holding the 2 screw drivers as per the E90 thread "How to" I also had to be very careful removing the circlip as it could easily drop (luckily there is a spare one in kit) for which I used some long nose pliers. The easiest bit was removing the gear knob. I just put it in 2nd and pulled upwards and the gear knob, leather trim and plastic trim that connects it all came off! I think I was suppose to remove the leather trim from the plastic one first! ops: I'm totally a novice when it comes to DIY stuff on the car and I was impressed how easy it was to do thanks to the excellent write ups and pics from BabyBMW and also E90 Forum. Went for a quick drive and the travel is obviously shorter and it snicks into gear quite nicely so I'm very pleased!

So you have to remove the midpipe from the downpipes to the exhaust? That I wager will be the most difficult part for me due to how much of a pain it is to clamp up the DP's. |

Actually, BMW even says you have to drop the drive shaft to properly get to the carrier that has to be replaced. Not a difficult thing, but consumes time, and of course if something goes wrong, like a bolt loosens or snaps, warranty claim and they see it wasn't installed in house, knowing BMWNA, it will be denied. Was worth the $200 to have a dealer throw it on, and my knuckles are happy for it...

Ok I finally installed the B&M SSK today. I had access to a lift which in hindsight is a HUGE bonus. It is not a bonus due to the difficulty (which is nil) but due to the angle at which you have to reach up to undo the U-clip and shifter arm. One the car is high enough and you have enough light (not to mention skinny girl wrists like mine...damn genes...LOL) then removed aforementioned parts is VERY easy. Install is reverse of removal. Took about an hour as stated in the instructions. You do NOT have to remove the driveshaft OR the midpipes. The throws are definitely shorter...maybe up to 45%-50% shorter..maybe more. I am assuming the shift motion will break-in over time. Right now it is a bit notchier than before- good thing, or bad thing depending on your preference. Two big thumbs up on this from me!
