Don't really see any difference between "Jap" and "Brit", or "Aussie"

It doesn't bother me unless it is used in a derrogatory way. I don't use that word though.

i'm not Japanese, but the slang has negative connotations from WWII days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Even law-abiding, patriotic Japanese American citizens who were born in the USA were sent to internment camps and treated like P.O.Ws. My ancestors were 2nd generation Americans who had to wear red ribbons signifying that they were Asian, but not Japanese.

I never see the term "Jap" used in the context of a positive sentence. I always see sentences like "I hate Jap designers, " or "Jap cars are cheap." When's the last time someone said "I know of a wonderful Jap restaurant?" Never, right? "Chink" or "Jap" doesn't sound as dignified as Brit or Aussie.

Well... the other "N" word in itself is not really a racist term either, but the heritage behind it made it into one, and I think the same goes for Jap. I believe it's a legitimate abb. but it should be used with great caution.

I see where the frogman's coming from,

it's such a world on LOL and ROFL j/k

it's unfortunate that the seeming natural shortening of the word Japanese would be the same as a term recieved as a racial slur by some.

I bet we are actually seeing a mix, where some are using it racially, while others are just trying to save keystrokes

Very true, doc! If fact, I do know of a very good Japanese restaurant in downtown Wilkes-Barre, "Katana Restaurant". And I guess I never took notice to this before until now, but I do say Japanese whenever I tell any of my friends about it. Same thing goes with with any other thing for me...the German Restaurant in the Poconos "The Edelweiss", and even the Chinese Restaurant "Five Star" out by the mall.

Of course, I'm not one to abbreviate in the first place. I don't think I've ever even abbreviated here in any of my posts...just not my style.

But I do think taking offense to "Jap" may be taking things a bit too seriously. I mean, as far as I can tell, it didn't seem like the original poster meant any disrespect. After all, it is short for Japan. On the other hand, I do acknowledge the negative connotations associated with this term, and therefore I'd never use it.

On a side note, about Katana's Restaurant I mentioned earlier, if any of you guys ever get around to NEPA and are in the Scranton-Wilkes Barre-Hazleton Metro area, I'd definitely recommend checking out Katana's. You have to sit at this huge table that actually doubles as the grill, and they have these chefs actually cook everything in front of you, AND they do little tricks like juggling, ect.

They also do this awesome volcano kind of thing with sliced onions...they stack the onion rings up to form a volcano and then pour some kind of oil and it shoots out like a volcano!

I don't know I thought it was cool...I was never at a restaurant like that before. Really cool, though.

In NYC JAP means something different and definately meant in a derrogatory way..

I'm not Japanese, so I can say anything about jap used in that context, but my family is Italian, and no one seems to take offense if people use various slang terms, even if it is meant in a derrogatory way.. You just think of the person from which that statement is coming from, and everything is good.

You didn't do so well on the analogy-based reasoning portion of the SATs, did you?

I think you're trying to get at this:

***:****** :: jap:japanese
abbreviated derogatory:derogatory ::abbreviated derogatory:non-derogatory

...but it doesn't work!

Just trying to have a little fun with you is all, natureboy! I know what you meant!

Okay, those of you that are offended what do you call the Jews? Seriously? I'm not Jewish, but I have a few good friends that are and I have even dated a few jewish women. I mean, seriously, look what they endured. :mad: Do not even get me started!

What about african americans? What do you call them?

BTW, don't forget the Spanish (Mexican/Cuban) population.

Kigger- korean jigga ( you get the point). One time I said "JAP" cus I couldnt pronounce japanese and my History teacher yelled at me. It just seems easier to just say jap. Like Viet for vietnamese. I think the offensive word for Japanese is "nip" (as in nippon). Speaking of which, have you guys seen that commercial for "cheese nips"??? The catch phrase was "bcus if you love nips, it shows." LOL How does anyone not recognize that verbage???

topics like this, while I know somepeople take things like this very seriously, tend to make me laugh. I couldn't care less what color you are or where you are from as long as you are good person. My family is of Italian descent and at family gatherings everyone laughs and reffers to each other as dego's.
