Soon to be noob....Intro

So, I pulled the trigger on a Crimson 135i 6spd after years of owning VAG cars. Looking forward to taking delivery and wasting my oney on this thing. I’ll have more pictures once I take delivery, but here she is, along with my previous rides. What mods should I start with first....ha, J/K, I know how to use the search function....

Welcome to the support group. You'll love it here. Great site and (mostly) helpful folks.

What's been done to the car pre-you --> any mods already? Looks like you've got a 2011 or later 135i n55 (LCI Update).

First up recommendation is to get upgrade the rear sub-frame bushings (RSFB) to the M3 RSFBs or get the Whiteline 2 piece units OR do what I did and get the Whiteline inserts. In order M3 RSFBs > WL 2 piece > Insers but the install time for the M3 units is a lot more involved which is why many of us get the inserts or 2 piece units.

The RSFB + a differential lockdown bracket (can order from a forum member here who makes them for reasonable price). Those 2 really lock down the rear end and make it sporty. Reduces the stock rear end feeling of it stepping out when accelerating out of long corners.

Front end swapping out the stock upper and lower control arms for M3 control arms improves the front end feel and turn in. You can get the BMW M3 ones or a set of TRW version through various vendors like ECS.

Those two are the key and best handling upgrades - bang for the buck improvements that I did.

Tune? - up to you. If you do get a charge pipe ASAP. The stocker plastic on is the weak link. The BMW PPK is good, or there is MHD and/or JB4 or some do like COBB. FMIC adds to it from there. Downpipes is you like it smelly.

Intake & Exhaust - this one is personal preference. Doesn't add a HP so many of us don't bother. Exhaust makes more noise and depending on if you have MT, Auto or DCT there is the drone factor. Again it doesn't add a lot of HP to the equation so totally up to you.

Suspension upgrades beyond the above - start reading brother. LOL!!

Other mods for aesthetics vs. performance there are many. Enjoy!

Wow, thanks for the reply. It’s a 2010 actually, so N54? The car is bone stock and under 70k miles. Plan is to go through it top to bottom with your typical maintenance stuff like coils/plugs, valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, brakes, and anything else the needs to be addressed. Then it’s suspension and wheels, and onto the JB4, intake, exhaust after that.....possibly some additional cosmetic mods like carbon spoiler and lip. As you can tell from my previous rides, I like performance, but like to keep the car fairly subtle looking.

2010? Odd. Your mirrors are LCI mirrors, though the rims are pre-LCI...hmm.

What everyone else has said. RSFB, front control arms (I replaced my stock front control arm bushings with poly, so I got the feel of M3 arms without the camber), maybe E93 front sway to help with front end responsiveness. Don't bother with a JB4 unless you're going to go E85 or meth. MHD's tune is the way to go on the E-series N54 platform. Even a basic Stage 1 tune is a huge improvement over stock. Welcome to the club...

The mirrors changed from the smaller ones to the larger ones in 2010.

Welcome, OP.

The rims were stock Sport (not Msport) post LCI. I have the same on my 2011 135i.

And very nice rims they are. I like them better than the M Sport.

Nice purchase, and welcome to the forum. Crimson Red is a cool color that isn't seen often anymore.

As far as coming from Audi and Volkswagen cars, I think you'll find the BMW refreshing. I owned a B6 S4 6-speed once and it was a miserable experience.

Sorry to hear that. I actually owned my B7 S4 longer than any other car I’ve owned. It was the most reliable and the most enjoyable out of them all. Not much beats and AWD, 6Spd, V8......those early B6’s can be a nightmare though.

Any reason why this site would show it as an automatic 135is? Car is definitely a manual.

Mine was actually a late production B6 right before the 2005.5 update. Nonetheless, the timing system was failing, the heads were leaking oil into the cylinders and the cylinder walls themselves were scored which accounted for 2.1 quarts of burnt oil for every thousand miles driven by itself. I loved the build quality of the car and the 40-valve head design was cool, but the handling let me down and I just wasn’t happy with it. Even after I made Audi replace the engine for free.

Hey there! I actually used to live in KC and was pretty active with the Audi/VW groups. I still have a lot of friends up that way and visit often.

You can ignore the "135is" bit- they're all called "is" in VIN lookups, it's been discussed to death & back again here.

As for the trans, looks like something got reversed in a recent update to the database or something- mine used to correctly show AUT, but this morning it's showing MANUELL

I find that Bimmer.work and BMWVIN.com are hit and miss as of late. They no longer recognize older BMW serial numbers, like those from the E30. Very annoying.

A couple of years ago I copied and pasted the VIN lookups of my former and current 1ers, thinking that one day I may not be able to look them up so easily. Guess it's a good thing that I did.

Nice looking car, Benny. There are very few Crimson Red 1ers out there, as I found out trying to replace my 2011 CR 128i manual. Tons of Tornado Red VW's around, but rare on a BMW of any kind. I'm sure you will find modding the N54 satisfying. Taking care of the known isuues like you plan to is a wise move. Definitely look into the rear subframe bushing upgrade. Midcorner bumps produce a very annoying rear end sensation. I'll be doing the M3 upgrade when it thaws out up here.
