Runflat Rim - Non Runflat Tire

Noobie 1er here!

Was told by BMW I require runflat tires for the BMW runflat rims. The problem is I already bought tires and didn't know they made different rims for runflats. Can anyone confirm? Can I install my non-runflat tires on stock 2011 128i rims?

Thanks.

You are fine
You can use your rims as is with regular tires. BMW makes staements liek that because they sell the cars with runflats

Rims are rims... I just put non-runflats (to replace my runflats) on my stock rims.

Someone at the dealership told me this as well, but it's not true. The rim is a bit different from a normal rim because it is designed to keep the run flat tire on in the event of a severe loss in tire pressure. But you can still put normal tires on the rim as well.

Pretty much all rims are designed like this these days. Run flat or not.

Are the guys at dealerships a**holes? They know they are lying about this, yet still say garbage like this. It's easily the worst part about owning a BMW.

I was told this by a tire shop that put my tires on a while back. The lips are just a bit different, like slightly larger or something like that. You're fine. Everyone ditches the crappy run-flats and put non-runflats on with no issues after for years.

Correct.

There is no reason you cannot mount non run flat tires on factory BMW wheels.

Also keep in mind that one of the reasons BMW put runcraps on cars was to save themselves money by not providing a spare, and to let the dealers earn money by selling people overpriced runflats when they do get a flat. You can usually fix a non-runflat tire very cheaply ($20) if you get a simple puncture, but if you get that with a runflat and drive it to the dealership, you may find yourself out $500. Guess which tire the dealership is going to recommend?

Honda/Acura sell a lot of vehicles without a spare or runflats. Just a compressor/sealant kit in the trunk. My smart was the same way.

My dealer told me the same thing. They just can't admit to themselves the RFTs are junk!

Notice you can get the Two and I suspect other series with Go Flats!

The difference in runflat and non runflat rims is a larger bump in the rim just before the rim lip (the tire centers between this bump and the rim lip when installed) When the bead is set the tire pops over the bump just like a non runflat wheel but as it is about 1/16" larger than a non runflat wheel, it can hold a tire a bit longer than a normal wheel in a totally flat condition.

Just to be clear for future searches, this does not prevent non run flat tires from being used on that wheel.
