2008 135i (E88?) Stuck In Park
We purchased a used 2008 135i about two months ago; last week it started getting stuck in park, i.e. when depressing the brake pedal it "dings" and will not shift to drive or reverse. If we press on the brake very hard or turn the car off several times it will sometimes work. Longest time it was stuck was 45 minutes in a grocery store parking lot. My dad is a mechanic, but isn't familiar with imports, he said it may have a service bulletin or recall released... Is there a way to search for that for free? BMW site wants $250 for a daylong subscription...
Perhaps someone here can tell me if there's a bad switch or sensor that I can easily replace? Thanks, Michael |

Do the brake lights also require a lot of force on the pedal to come on? I would think they are triggered by the same switch. If this is the case, that switch should be above the pedal in the brackets under the dash. I hate working in this area but if you are flexible you can. The bracket holding the switch may be bent or it could have an adjustment. You could look on "RealOEM" to see what it looks like and exactly where it is. Jim

There is a procedure to override the selector lever lock. Should be in the owners manual. Don't think that really addresses the underlying issue but could allow you to move the vehicle if the lever gets stuck again.

First thing I would check is if the brake lights come on or not.
Saw this on YouTube, not sure if it applies to the 1er auto. All auto trans cars have some way of getting it into neutral without battery power. Last edited by MightyMouseTech; 10-08-2014 at 11:25 AM.. |

+ 1 on the brake switch.
Had the same problem with a Mazda and was found to be the brake switch.

I would start with that. Could be several different things. Had a weird one the other day, an old Acura 1.6 EL would not come out of park, turned out to be a bad Throttle Position Sensor if you can believe it. Put in a new throttle body, all fixed.

(Assuming you are trying to shift when the engine is running) I'm going to go against the grain and say it might not be a sensor problem for 1 reason: The engine is running.
If you managed to start the engine, then the car either knew the brake pedal was being applied, or it has a dodgy sensor. If it had a dodgy sensor though, I would think that it would also disable the shift lock as well as the start lock thingie, and would throw an error message at you constantly. I would check the cables going to the shifter to see if any are broken. Might be that the shifter itself isn't receiving the signal that the brake is depressed. My shifter cover thingie comes up with just a tug on the fabric boot frigger in the back corner opposite the driver. It has some wires running to it, so don't go yanking it up like he-man. |
