Are there any issues with running 255/40/18 on stock wheels and suspension? Feedback in this thread suggests it's ok but are these members on stock wheels.

Gents,

I'm currently running Michelin PSS all round with 225 upfront and 255 rears on stock wheels and height.

As others have experienced, we can no longer source 255/35/18 fitment...should I revert back to 245/35/18 which is available in PSS or go down the 255/40/18 path?

255/40/18 have worked fine for me on stock wheels and height. I went from stock runflat to these per the suggestions in the thread and am happy

I'll probably get flamed for this, but yikes, 255/40 is 4.8% more rolling diameter, way too much out of spec. Worse handling from the taller sidewall, greater chance of sidewall rollover in the corners, has the effect of 'gearing up' as the rolling circumference is greater (so the acceleration is a little slower).

Its also illegal:

VIC: Look on page 7
https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/~/me...les.ashx?la=en

NSW:
http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/...si-09-rev4.pdf

Cannot increase the rolling diameter beyond 15mm. Going from a 245/35 to a 255/40 is over 30mm greater diameter than stock.

This would just make the speedo "Accurate" then?

If you use your phone gps, where you use to be 4-5km under now the speedo should read true

The factory speedo is out 4-5 km on stock runflats

The speedo reading is taken from abs module and uses that to get its speed

Just use the phone gps to check your true reading.

As others have reported the speedo is of by 5km or 3mph and there was some discussion about it years ago

May I ask what I fear is a naive question? Appreciate the analogue speedo will be impacted by change in diameter, how does the digital km's traveled calculation work? I tried to google but I can't get the right phrase to get the right answer. i.e. will the km's travelled be 3-5% out too?

Apparently the odometer is also affected, on the side of the hwy there is the 1,2,3,4,5 km speed check markers, which you use your odometer to check the odometers accuracy. Its always out with stock tyres.

In the old cars you could manipulate the signal going to the digital dash or electronically controlled speedo by a vdo speedo correction pulse counter or by changing the speedo cable gear that drives the old analogue speedo cables.

These days its not that easy, the new stuff is designed to stop people tampering with
the odometers so they can get a higher price at resale.

The speedo in our cars is calculated by the abs sensor

Right, looks like I may ditch the 255/40 option and either revert back to 245/35 option or try something comparable to the PSS in a 255/35 fitment
