Brake replacement - recommendations?
Hey Guys,
Looking for some advice on an upcoming brake replacement. I was leaning towards BMWP rotors (front/rear) and Akebono or EBC reds for lower dust vs. OEM. Looks like the 2-piece ECS rotors have some decent reviews. Thoughts or direct experiences here? I had them on my Audi, no issues seen there.

Can't help with rotors, but I installed a set of Meyle ceramic pads from ECS a few months ago, and for street driving I quite like them. No squeal, low dust and quite inexpensive...

I just installed EBC Reds a few weeks ago and so far I'm not too impressed with the brake dust. Still seems like alot. I dont have too many miles on them yet so they may still be seating. From what i understand Akebono doesn't make pads for the 135i. I checked because I had them on my MINI and loved them.

Akebono does not make pads for our 135i
I installed Cool Carbons quite a while ago and am not impressed with how much dust I am still getting on the wheels. I will probably go with a different pad once these have worn.

Damn, that was me assuming they did. I ran them on my Audi and was really impressed with the performance and dust level.

Agreed, no change from OEM dust with the cool carbons. They do perform better, however.

I was looking at the ECS two-piece front rotors (drilled/slotted), but it seemed like they are more expensive than the BMW pieces? Does it make sense to pair OE rotors with Stop Tech Street Performance pads? I think there are two, Stop Tech street/track pads but don't quite understand the difference between them.

If you plan on doing heavy track work and need more heat resistance at the expense of noise, dust, and worse cold performance, then look at a track oriented pad from any of the various vendors out there including stoptech. These can definitely be used with OEM rotors, it's really about what you will be using your car for more than anything before you decide if a 2 piece aftermarket "upgrade" is really required or not. |

Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear on this. My 128i has the BMW Performance Brake kit consisting of the 6 piston calipers and cross drilled/slotted rotors from the 135i and 328i rear single piston calipers and rotors. What I should have said is that the ECS two-piece rotors seem to be more expensive than the comparable BMW Performance Brake kit rotors (according to the admittedly not always accurate pricing on realoem.com).
