This is probably the most realistic reason, but with spirited driving in low gear through winding coastal roads where filling stations are far and few, the 135i may drink closer to 15 MPG (U.S. gallons), so if there's a reserve in the tank, the warning light would come on in less than 180 miles! :eyebulge:

If they really can't sacrifice any more space for it, I'll take my lumps, but I know creativity can solve most any problem.

A friend of mine has a Porsche Cayman. Not that I'm competing with him in any way (okay, maybe), his tiny 2,866-lb two seater has a 16.9 gallon tank and gets 23/32 EPA mpg!

While the entire BMW line is considered more daily-useable.

I just recently purchased a 135i. Came out of a '08 Acura TL-S 6mt.

In my Acura, when you reached 0 miles to empty on the fuel range...I still had @2 gallons remaining. Does anyone know if BMW has "a little extra" once the range reads 0 miles to empty?

just wondering,

On my 135i when the tank marker is right on the empty hash mark, I have about a gallon still left in the car. I've driven it below the hash mark and it's got like half a gallon at that point.
I try not to do that regularly, but it happens.
So, there is some left.
I think when the "warning" goes off, we have about 2 gallons left.

Tidbit: Once you're fuel warning goes on, just press the left button on the computer stalk and it goes away, until a few miles then it comes back on. Press again and it goes away. It of course keeps coming back quicker and quicker as you get seriously low on fuel.

yeah sure the tank is small.
which = weight savings for me.
and although i have to fill up slightly more often, i feel a little better about myself when my gas bill is 38 rather than 50.

I haven't done this yet on my 128i but on my SUV I calculated fairly accurately how much gas I have left when the warning light comes on. All you need to do is to record the miles on the tank when the light come on and also record you mileage and gallons at fillup (like normal for me, I keep a little notebook in each car). Then when you are calculating mileage in your spreadsheet (also my normal practice), you can use your average mileage for that tank to compute how much gas you had used when the light came on. Subtract that from your tank size (manufacturer data) and you have the gallons left. I have more than 2 gallons left in my SUV which gets 25-26 mpg so I figure I have another 50 miles. I have only run out once and that was because I was pushing it to more like 75 miles.

It's easier to just fill up when the light comes on, however.

What I don't understand is that on the 135 BMW fits a dead weight in the rear so as to get 50/50 weight distribution. Why not enlarge the fuel tank and gain more weight that way?

Or give us a spare tire kit.

There is?

How much weight is it? And, where is it?
Hell, a mini spare would have done the trick then.

The dead weight is most commonly referred to as the "back seat".

The extra fuel would not provide a consistant ballast. There is a 50 lb. weight at the rear bumper.

My previous car a 2008 VW GTI also had a 14 gallon tank however it averaged about 24mpg in the city. So i guess 14 gallons for the 1er isn't that bad.
