UPS brokerage into Canada avoidance??

I ordered about $200 worth of parts from ECS tuning with UPS shipping. Delivery was attempted yesterday $72 brokerage and duty of that $22 is the duty, and $50 is UPSs fees. I have been wanting to try this for a while

http://trueler.com/2010/11/24/self-c...brokerage-fee/

I will be self clearing my package about 15-20 min of work should save me the $50. Anyone here try this?? I will be heading to the CBSA office today. I will post back my results. This works for shipments of up to $1600.

Let me know how it goes - I've got a shipment arriving Friday from ECS worth about $125 and I'm not looking forward to seeing how much I owe for duty / customs. I hate UPS.

Cheers,
Bryan

Just use CAN EASE saver option next time you order from ECS. Will give you an upfront price including everything, so no extra charges to worry about.

I looked into that, but it was a lot more expensive. I used the UPS brokerage rate table to see that it should have been about $29 brokerage, but that didn't include the other fees they add plus for some reason they base the brokerage amount based on the total including shipping charges which bumped me from the $150-$200 range into the $200-$300 range increasing the fee to $45, plus there is a $6 and $5.50 fees that they tack on, but can't really justify what they are for.

Estimating about 10% duty (which was bang on), and $29 brokerage UPS worked out cheaper.

So I got my commercial invoice from UPS took about 10 min to get it emailed to me. Took it to the CBSA office in Calgary, walked right up to the counter no wait. 10 min, and $10 later I have my receipt. I took that to UPS since my package was supposed to be held for pickup, but it was on the truck. Got home, and a couple of hours later the truck shows up, I give him the receipt, and sign for my package.

total time spent 30 min
total saved $62

If you ship throu USPS there typically is little to no brokerage. Avoid ups.

I use USPS whenever I can, but when USPS is about $30+ more than UPS you can self clear, and save the large brokerage fees. USPS is usually around $5.00 Brokerage. In the past I have refused to buy things that are shipped UPS only. With how easy this is I don't have to worry about it.

Great to hear that it worked! Unfortunately, I'm going to run out of time with this particular shipment - too busy at work to make it to the CBSA office before I leave town next week.

Cheers,
Bryan

If a company isn't willing to ship USPS they aren't worth my business.

Just 2 weeks ago I purchased LCI taillights via ECS Tuning.

$465 CDN was my bill for the lights.

Upon arrival, I had to pay $120 in brokerage fees.

Any way of appealing this or speaking to someone about having it lowered?

USPS has the worst tracking ever.
UPS usually is cheaper ship method...IF you know how to do it right.

You need to do as above has said. Let UPS know that you will clear item. Drive to closest customs office (usually down road from UPS depots) . Pay taxes if applicable and walk out with receipt to go pickup your item at UPS.

UPS shipping is faster and most times will cost less than USPS

I've ordered big items like tires and wheels, exhausts, etc and never had to pay extra brokerage like others have...just need to know how to do it.

USPS brokerage is usually only about $5 plus the customs. Since you can't avoid the customs the work isn't worth it to save the $5.

Have it shipped next day air. Brokerage is included in the price. Works out being the same price, or cheaper, and you get your parts the next day.

Probably only about $30 of that was brokerage. You still have to pay duty and tax as well. Can not get around that.

For small parts I have shipped next day air (see above) or for larger items I have them shipped to the UPS store in Ogdensburg, NY, drive down and pick it up, then bring it across the border myself. Luckily Ogdensburg is only a 45 minute drive for me.

I just used this on my last order, BMW performance SSK for my 1, Aux input and valve cover gasket for my X3, still worked out cheaper than buying it all in canada.

CF spoiler and mirror covers and black kidneys for the 335i are $1562 plus HST through a Canadian dealership.

With ECS tuning, it's around $1399 for all the parts plus Cana Ease shipping. They claim that is a "to your door" price.

Seems like an easy decision...

Brokerage is a scam! I clear UPS packages all the time to avoid the charges. UPS in Winnipeg is only about 5 minutes away from customs so it is a pretty easy process
