Going down-hill with auto gearbox

Had my car for 6 weeks now and I still can't work out how to go down a steepish hill near home without the engine changing down through the gears and revving it's head off. I have worked out that if I give the brakes a bit of a firm push every now and then, eveything seems ok but if I just feather the brakes, all of a sudden the tacho is sitting on 6,000 rpm and I look like a dick going down this hill, it's a bit embarrassing.

I hope this isn't covered in the owners manual, my apologies for being lazy if it is.

I would also like to say that as good as the 125 is, I didn't expect to have rattles in the car already. My Prado is nearly three years old and done almost 60k and it's still as tight as the day I collected from the dealer.

Wish I could help but we don't have any steep roads in Perth. Flat as a pancake here.

I haven't even been able to try out the Hill Descent Control in the wife's X5!

I don't think you can do anything about it if you stay in auto mode.

Switch it to DS and change gear to what you want. This will stop it changing down like that.

May be I am making this up but sounds like the car is detecting the gradient and decided to shift and engine brake. Nothing wrong with going down at 60k, it's fun, and it saves your brakes.

+1

if you go into manual mode and select a high gear, say 4 or 5 it should hold that gear until you switch back to normal D mode.

When i'm driving up in 'cuse I tend to leave the car in 3rd. On some of the larger hills the car will rev up to around 5500. Its fine for the car it just makes a bit of noise.

Even in D mode if you change gears via the paddles it will hold that gear until you next press the accelerator gently for a short period of time.

I do what AussieRacer said. Save brakes ... come on. Engine and transmission cost more.

MarkFC, BMW auto's do that. When the realises you're picking up speed going down an incline and you're not accelerating, it will drop back a gear. Gentle braking at that time can cause it to further downshift another gear.

As alluded to above, if you don't like that behaviour, probably the easiest thing to do is to pull the 'up gear' paddle (ie 'fingers' not 'thumb') in 'D' mode. That will firstly bring you back to the gear you were in ahead of the first downshift, and remain there until such time as you resume driving on a flatter surface. This 'manual' mode in 'D' (as opposed to 'DS') reverts to full automatic 'D' mode after a period of cruising.

Hope this helps.

I agree with changing the gears manually. I used to have the same problem with my X5 when I first got it on going down and up hills - ie downshifting, ++revs and looking like an idiot cos of all the noise. I changed gears manually but then a funny thing happened, after several thousand kms it seemed as if the transmission had ''learned'' my driving behaviour and adapted. As after the several thousanf kms of telling it what to do, it no longer downshifted in D when attacking those same hills.

When I got the transmission resetted due to slow gear changes and jerkiness, the same thing happened again but then adapted as above.

Wonder whether yours will do the same in a few thousand kms? Time will tell.
