Is extended warranty worth it?
I'm in a position to get 3 years extended warranty for parts and labour for $1700, do you think its worth getting?

If that is what they are offering and you intend to keep the car past the original warranty period, go for it. BMW normally give you the option after the initial 3 years to extend for a further 12 months for $950.. So $1700 for 3 years is a bargain.. |

Yeah its an additional 3 years over and above the factory 3 year period.
Good point about the mileage, I'll check with them tomorrow. All I know is that its for parts and labour through Alliance. Its apparently something new they are offering on prestige cars. I will be keeping the car probably till its around 5-6 years old, unless I win the lotto and buy a 135i...hehe I'm not greedy. |

At the risk of being cynical -- look into it in detail. From what you've said, it's unclear whether it's a BMW warranty extension, or a dealer sold 3rd party warranty.
If it's a genuine extension of the BMW warranty, as other have said, it sounds like a bargain. On the other hand, if it's a dealer offered, 3rd party "warranty", then it's nothing more than an insurance policy, and you need to read the fine print very carefully. I was caught with such a "policy" once, and I was amazed (and out of pocket) when it came to claiming. Excesses on each claim, predetermined maximums on each repair - eg. $1000 for a completely failed transmission (most of which a BMW would exceed easily, and you carry the difference), requirements to use specific brand lubricants, etc, etc, etc... I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just suggesting that you make sure you know EXACTLY what you're getting for your money. |

The warranty is through Allianz, I just checked the fine print and you can claim up to $2000 per claim and take it to the repairer of your choice. Pretty much covers everything except things like tyres, brakes, hoses etc. General wear and tear I guess.
I'm just finding out if there is an excess, limit of claims per year, and if its transferable to someone else should I sell it within the extended 3 year period. Sounds pretty good. I'm just selling a 2004 VW R32 which I've had for 2yrs and I know I've spent around $1500 on repairs in that period and the car only has 53,000kms. Your thoughts? |

My advice is good choice of BMW over VW haha j/k.
Yeah repair bill for euro car is huge. Get it if you intend to keep the car over the warranty peroid.

Might be worth asking Allianz if you can buy it directly from them at the end of the normal factory warranty period.
Circumstances can change in 3 years - you may not want it. I guess buying it now you lock in the price, but you may also be paying the dealer margin on it. |

Sorry to bring up an old post.
My business partner took up an extended warranty on his new Lexus and he suggested I look at it for the BMW, so I phoned Brisbane and they said they don't offer an extended warranty and haven't done since 2006. The lady I spoke to didn't offer any third party cover either. Does this sound correct with others experience? I was going to keep my car for probably 4 years. Thanks
