Custom Exhaust on 2011 128i
Hello,
Im new to the 1 series community. I just purchased a 2011 128i Black Completely stock. Planning on some modifications I want to ask how many have done a custom exhaust on a 128i? What is the stock size diameter of the 128i exhaust? I've always done custom exhaust on other cars, i was thinking about a borla muffler like i used to have in my previous car? Thanks! |

Most of us will simply go with the performance exhaust, as its extremely simple and provides AMAZING sound benefits without any drone or excessive noise, i would highly suggest looking into that. If thats too pricy for you, you can get a stock(or any) 135i axle back section, and cut your stock 128 mids and have it custom fitted to work with the 135i axleback. I've done this myself and ran a muffler delete that was incredibly loud and annoying albeit beautiful sounding, and now i run a stock 135i muffler that sounds just as great but much quieter than the straight pipe. The stock 135i axleback is louder than stock and sounds much nicer along with some nice exhaust pops.

I think the stock size of the pipe is 50mm but I'm working from memory. You should explore RealOEM for a reliable input. Also from memory, I think somebody found that the highest output n52 has 75mm pipe. That would be a pretty big change but is probably the largest you should consider. I don't think a larger exhaust by itself will raise your hp a lot but that in combination with the 3 stage inlet and reprogramming (a tune) should. The interesting thing is the X3/5 n52s are rated as high as 272hp. 40 hp more than we have should be quite noticable.

BMW Performance exhaust is definitely the way to go. Roughly $600, perfect factory fitment, well made, and sounds fantastic.

Exactly. In this case, BMW provides such an ideal solution that it just doesn't make much sense to go looking to the aftermarket for an alternative. The sound is absolutely perfect - OEM fitment and quality is just the icing on the cake.

Especially when most of the other solutions require half assing it in some way or another.

Isn't the BMW performance exhaust just a muffler? I accept it sounds good but replacing the muffler would not seem to make much if any difference in the performance. The BMW supplied pipe is not unreasonable in size for a 3 liter engine but it is not mandral bent so it is more restrictive than it needs to be. If the OP is looking for performance maybe he needs to consider a custom solution with larger mandral bent pipe or possibly the Magnaflow cat back. At least it's tubing appears to be mandral bent.

Mentioned a muffler and the phrase "custom exhaust". None of the mufflers make power on our car and "custom" just means no R&D in terms of exhaust. Here we go though, for the benefit of the doubt: http://www.supersprint.com/en/IT/pro...converter.aspx

From what I've found its a cat back system. Perf is axle back. There was one other company I found that had a cat back system but was upwards of $1200.
