stealing car

Say I was within the distance for the comfort access to be recognized by the vehicle. Could someone walk up to the car, open the door and drive away? If so would the car continue to operate until turned off? Just wondering.

You have to be standing practically next to the car for the CA to be picked up.

If your right next to the car they can open it but it appears they have to be opening the door your closest too so you cant be at the passenger door and they open your driver door but then the key needs to be in the car for it to crank. If the car is cranked and the key removed it will stay running until its shut off. AT least this is how its suppose to work but CA is defintly not 100% perfect

When I had my E90 with CA the key had to be in my pocket and my hand would complete the ground and unlock the car. Funny thing was, I couldn't wash the car with the fob in my pocket. As soon as the stream of water from the hose hit the car the connection would complete and the car would lock, then fold the mirrors in!

Wish I had it on my 135i, loved comfort access.

With my CA, I need to be within 5 feet of the car for the windows to operate and as everyone says, the fob must be inside the car to start.

And what would prevent a carjacker from doing it the old fashioned way - simply forcibly taking your fob, key or whatever?

So it doesn't seem that CA makes any difference.

You can steal a BMW using a blank key in under 3 minutes if you have the hardware.

Ur right it will continue to run until shut off. The next question is would it allow you to put it in gear and drive away. I know on my moms Mercedes if you start it via the the keyless go and say u take the key back inside and try and go back to the car and drive. It will still run but when you try to put it in gear the Info screen in the dash will light up red and it will say no key shifting not possible and you cant shift from park. I have never tried with the BMW tho. I will try it this evening with my dads 335 (automatic) and report back. When I pick up my 6mt 135 n a week or so ill try with that one as well see if there's any difference.

Back when the 1 series was new in the USA I remember some guy started the car with the key in his pocket and backed it out of the garage for his wife. With it still running from his key start she jumps in thinking she has a key in her purse but does not and drives off. All is well until she turns the car off! Now there is no key to start the car.

Yup started it with comfort access last night took the key back n my house went back outside and drove around the block. I'm dissapointed that BMW didnt make this feature like Mercedes where it locks the shifting lever once the key is not n proximity. I mean ya once they shut it off they can't go anywhere else but the thief can still leave with it.

Had the exact same thing happen that IDBMW said.

My wife took me to work and thought she had her fob with her, so I got out and went to work and she drove to my daughters daycare. Turned the car off and then went in, when she came back she couldnt start the car and realized the fob was at home.

I thought it was hilarious, she wasnt too happy though.

There is a huge icon on the dash when you are in the car without a fob, how can you miss this!

I think their point is that if someone were stealing the car they wouldn't want the car to allow just anyone to drive a running a BMW if the key is not present. My 2011 Acura TL would totally lock up if I removed the key. In fact if the key was not there and I pressed the brake the car shut down. Very impressive security on the Acura.

That's what my moms mercedes does exactly and yes that was my point that BMW should have made their keyless go system the same way that the shift gate would lock or pressing the brake would turn it off when the keys not in the car. However euro tuner I think that last guy was talkin about the poster that said his wife drove off without the key an never realized until after it was shut off.
