The article says that the 325i and 335i are the only ones not getting DI. That's easy to explain with the 335i - it already has DI. Since the 325i, 328i and 128i all share the same basic engine, I'm assuming this means we won't be seeing DI on the 128i.
That's not how I read it:

All models now come with direct injection technology providing most of the engines with minor power upgrades. Power is up for all the petrol engines except in the 325i and 335i
I read that as saying all the engines will receive DI, but not all will get a power boost.

That's OK with me, as DI usually provides better low end torque, and fuel economy. Both things the 328 could use.

Aha! Great point. I'm back to hopeful, bordering on optimistic again.

230 ponies in the 128i is enough to give me an enjoyable, spirited drive in the way I'll use the car everyday. And the 200 lb/ft of torque was good enough in the 3er, so it'll probably be very good in the 1er. But if I were going to ask for help anywhere, it would be in the torque department. If they could give me 230/220 engine, I'd be thrilled.

Yep, it would be like the old 330, which felt very nice. Just about perfect, actually.

The 328 felt like it needed a little more torque, IMO. Of course, my current car is boosted, so most NA motors feel that way.

Too bad. VAG brings the FSI 2.0T's over here, we just don't run stratified like you fellas can in the EU.

I want DI.
