Lease rates. Rates are higher and residuals lower for 1M than 135 or 128. Go figure.

Remember these are guaranteed minimum values. The percieved risk of getting one back that has been regularly tracked or otherwise thrashed is higher than a 135i. IMHO residuals for a good example will hold up well.

Ouch! On my lease calculator that comes in around $925/month with 0 down. Those are some really low residuals.

I leased an Audi A6 2.7T in 2004. This car had a 58% residual for 36 months, and a 0.0009 MF. The 1M seems really low at 48% (if I read this chart correctly) at 36 months. I am sure this 1M would hold it value much better than that A6.

Why would the future value of the 1M be comparatively low?

One possibility, BMW may be looking to roll out the next version of the 1M within 36 to 48 months. Doing so would definitely impact the future value of the current 1M as reflected in these lease rate residuals. Anyone have any insight on the schedule of the next 1M?

Alternatively, BMW sees a substantial lease profit opportunity (likely).

Lastly, the longest term residuals appear to be greater than there model cousins reflecting the expectation that the 1M will retain a greater portion of its value in 5 plus years. I believe this may coincide with other M models (?).

I've always been under the impression that leasing cars are good for those who change out cars every 2-3 years?? If you plan on keeping it, or not getting into another car\lease, it can cost you substantially more in the long run. Compared with financing.....

Looks like the thing to do is keep the car right at 4 years. That first year is a lulu.

Really depends.

When I researched my e93 M3, if I were to have bought it and sold it in about 3 years, my total cost would have been about $1000/month etc (when you take in consideration depreciation, financing, etc)

But I was able to lease the car for $811/month.

So by leasing the car, I'm paying less overall, and I really don't plan on keeping the car for more than 3 years.

Max would be 4 years/50k Miles.

Owning a M after warranty...you're asking for expenses.

But from these values on the 1M, it seems more advantageous to buy it rather than lease it

See this troubles me when people say owning a M is asking for expenses. One would think M cars because they are built for track, ideally, should last longer than regular BMWs.

YES! Totally agree, they took parts from their warehouse. Its in a way a test mule for the next gen M3 and a gauge for the enthusiasts about a forced induction M.

Yes, owning an M after warranty is expensive, they are like trophy wives and require more attention to detail. Yes, they are built for the track.

Nonetheless, BMW wants this car to be the next e30 M3 or the e46 M3 CSL. They want to sell the most they can in a short period of time. That's why there so much hype about it, they want it to make it a classic from the start.

When the e30 M3 came out it was a test mule too, a car for the road that would rival in the track or the slogan they used for the e9x, "racecar for the streets' or something along those lines. Even if the current cars are not race spec from the factory like 25 years ago, they still have race technology in them. A tracked or not a racecar is expensive to maintain in tip top condition and a commitment. Period.

This car is for the enthusiasts no like the any other 135i its special in its own way. The CSL was a test mule and a gauge too for the e92's carbon fiber roof. The 1M and its engine is the test mule for the next inline-6 in the M3.

The 1M is not for fanatics of one thing today, and another the next day. It is for those that will keep it for a long time. People that are enthusiast at heart, not those who would lease and trash the car, then its put in the market for someone else to trash. That why the car's value gets depreciated, because it was trashed from one owner to the next.

I have an e30 M3 and an e46 since brand new. I keep them because they are special to me, they are not just a car. They are mean machines that are a joy to drive.

PS. I have my flame suit on.

A BMW out of warranty is expensive too

$2k drive off, included DMV fee (980 or something) and first month payment, dealer fees and whatnot

7 MSDs

Without the MSDs, my payment would have been like $30-40 higher

10k miles per year.
12k would have been about $22 more per month.

I am not surprised the residuals are low. Someone at BMW thought about the resale value of these cars:

- All of them will be 6MT in a country where the take rate on manuals is very low.
- Based on our own polling data, roughly 1/3 of the cars produced will have orange paint.
- Due to the all-or-nothing optioning brain fart, a number of the cars will be strippers.

So outside of the enthusiasts here (many of which will find a way to buy this car new), how many consumers in the market for a CPO BMW will buy the small, orange, manual car with no options on the dealer's lot? They are playing it safe knowing that the CPO customer may very well choose the 135i w/ DCT and a desirable paint color over the pumpkin.

If anything, this speaks to BMW's own doubt in their self-proclaimed and preconceived "collector car" status of the 1M.

That being said, I'm still getting one (just need to decide between VO and AW and wait for my lowly dealer to get an allocation).
