Any way to get oil temp from the OBD port?

I looked at the scangauge II which has just about everything else, but no oil temp.

Anyone know of a plug-in solution or is it going to require an adapter block?

You can use the BT tool to display/read oil temp.

Also... BMW's Perf digital steering wheel also displays coolant and oil temps. I would bet even generic OBD-II scan tools would show oil temp as well as other data points.

They don't list BMW in their gauge estimator list, but it does say it supports CAN-bus which is what I think it'd fall under.

I'll email them and report back what I find.

I've since found that leatherZ has a gauge kit and oil distro block which could get us oil temp, oil pressure, and coolant temp. Includes all sensors, instructions, a nice gauge pod that fits in the cubby, gauges and wiring. But, it's about $500. I'm really just looking for something where I can get a baseline for oil temperature in the summer.

This isn't looking too promising from what I've found so far.

Ultra gauge didn't get back to me with any answers. Scangauge didn't know if they're planning to add support for BMW. Bavarian Technic's diagnostic tool doesn't yet support 2011 (or I think 2010?) models, but seems like it's the most promising so far. I've asked them what live data can be pulled from the ECU as I've been told that it may not even monitor oil pressure.

However the BT tool isn't meant to be an add on gauge, it's a workshop diagnostic tool that hooks up to a laptop.

From what I've been able to find out it seems that right now a physical gauge setup is the only real solution.

3d Design makes a really high quality looking gauge pod for the ashtray/cubby (nicer than LeatherZ's IMO) but it's $360 for just the plastic housing.

Unfortunately as of now it doesn't look like there's a reasonably priced OBD-II plugin device that can read the BMW specific stuff.

I do have a question about this. does 128i have a oil temp sensor? anyone know this?

I've spent some time looking at realoem, and I'm not sure it does. It has what I believe is a coolant temp sensor at the front of the head, right where the coolant pipe attaches.

The only sensor I have found so far on the oil system are the oil level sensor on the sump, and the oil pressure switch on the oil filter housing block.

Now I am wondering if the car determines when to give an oil level reading based on the coolant temperature.

P3 makes a gauge for our cars and it reads, oil temp, boost, coolant, air intake temp, ignition timing, exhaust gas temp, throttle, speed, 0-60 time.

For the N55 cars in addition to the plug n play of the OBD2, you have to use the analog boost sensor wire.

Just had it installed and after a return visit to the dealer everything seems to be working.

Nope, it doesn't: I have an Ultragauge and it will display coolant temperature, but not oil temperature.

It works only on 135i.... but 135i already has an oil temp gauge

I have the P3 gauge installed in my 128 and it does not display oil temp unfortunately.

I thought the P3 gauge used a boost pressure/vacuum line only for the N54 engine. I thought that on N55's the gauge was totally PnP thru the OBDII port. ?

Dakelone...you, me and my BMW tech understood the same. N55 uses the boost gauge except in those instances where it requires the additional wire (*it's in the super fine print)

Also...P3 was as useful as a condom after the fact. I sent them 3 emails and they answered none of them...awesome customer support

But it's finally working and I'm measuring 15lbs of boost at peak and all other functions work.

Some time ago I tried the Lite version to test it and there was no Oil Temp parameter for E82 and that's ther reson why I didn't buy it!
