VANOS recall/extended warranty poll.
I got a ten year warranty on the VANOS via letter from BMW. Instead of a recall. Curious how this breaks out. Here's what was originally announced, so these cars only, please.

Checked my VIN against the BMW Website and it was not subject to the recall, even though it was manufactured in February of 2011. Got the letter the other day for the extended warranty/reimbursement for previous repair. Haven't had any problems whatsoever at ~35K miles.

Both of us are unlikely to get satisfaction from BMW on this. |

N52. Feb 2010 build date. 2 recall letters, plus a hit on BMW's recall site, plus a hit at the dealer when in for brake service. Repaired by dealer. Never heard of the extended warranty.

I figure BMW isn't quite sure about some 6 cylinder engines having the problem Vanos bolts while others they are dead certain.
The dead certain ones they have no choice but do the fix. The rest are a gamble. Will the ten-year warranty extend to subsequent owner? Who knows? |

Manufacture date; 10/09.
No recall, just extended warranty letter. I just got the letter last week but it is dated August 2014...

I figure that they're giving the ten year extension to some 128s, because they have lower power. Maybe those with some other magic (little high rpm use?) recorded by the electronics? BMW no doubt stores the readouts. The bottom line is that we're all just guessing. If we had VIN ranges for the various solutions, that would tell us more. Not available. The ten year letter does say it extends to subsequent owners. |

I just looked at their income statement, and the company's net income is around $5B/year. Total revenue is around $76B/year and after operating expenses and other charges, the company nets $5B of income which some goes to share holders and the rest is retained earnings.
It should impress you that $76B of total revenue is whittled down to $5B of net income. Unfortunately the income statement doesn't break out the recall or administrative expense; however, you might consider labor rates for dealers run anywhere from $100 to $200/hour. Administrative costs are enormous due to dealing with US safety and environmental regulations, contacting owners, and then the dealers. Remember this is a foreign company. I can see you don't understand income statements or balance sheet accounting, because you are just throwing around numbers. In any case, these "mistakes" greatly hurt companies. |
