What would you replace the 135 with?
Inspired by Sir Alpine's magnificent sales result I got to thinking about what I might replace my car with. At the moment the 135 is only a few months old. Also (OT) Toyota 120 D4D is only 18 months old so in no rush.
ATM, theoritical 135 replacement shortlist (all manual & in no particular order): FPV F6 (had an XR6T and loved it. 310 Killerwasps sounds amusing) E Type V12 (I know it wont work very well, but drop dead gorgeous) RS4 V8 (second hand) DB7 (second hand) OT - Thinking maybe Disco 4 3.0 diesel for the Playdo? Interested in what you lot think you might move to after your 135 |

Three options
1) a 123d (as odd as that sounds) 2) an M3 3) a deposit on a 2nd house

I was just in the market for a car to replace my 135 that BMW bought back from me. There was a wad of cash in my pocket, but my top end limit was 50k, and I wanted a brand new car, not used. I went out and tested a bevy of automobiles; Audi A3, A4, & TT, Ford GT500, Nissan 370 Nismo & "standard", Lexus IS300, Infiniti G37.
None of them had what I get from the 135. The Audi was nice, but I don't like 4 doors, and a properly specced A5 would have gone over budget. And if I recall correctly, the Audis may not have had a manual tranny option. Also, the engine were way under powered for the $$. The GT500 was insanely fun in a straight line, but I had to sit behind that Mustang dahsboard and in Mustang seats to use the power. Also it has the 3rd highest insurance rates of any car on the road. The Lexus was boring as could be. Same for the Infiniti. The 370Z Nismo was the closest to the 135 in performance, but had nothing in the way of creature comforts. No nav, no leather seats, no sunroof, no powerseats. And it was more than $40k. So the more and more I kept looking for a car to replace the 1er, all I could keep doing was going back to the 1er. Great engine, fun as hell everyday performance, in a pinch it seats 4, new iDrive is great, comfy supportive seats, and oh yeah, didi I mention the Engine? If I had the extra 10k, I would have gone M3, but I didn't have it to spend.

Cayman S. It's the car that I really wanted rather than the 135i but I couldn't justify ~$150k for one of the current model ones just at the moment.

E90 M3, for the family man who doesn't want to hide his light under a bushell.
Although I have one, I'm getting around in a Hyundai i30 which I inherited from a now ex-staff member. (Honestly, who really thinks they get to keep the a company car when they leave!!!!) Not bad for a daily work run hack but you sure do appreciate those 414 ponies on the weekend!!!

The 135i will ruin you for many other cars. I was thinking about a change to a Porsche Cayman S or Boxster S but after driving I was really underwhelmed by the lack of power. All that torque so low in the rev range that the 135i has is really addictive!
In the end I decided light weight was the only way to go so I bought a Lotus Elise 111R (~860kg). Sure it only has 190hp stock but there are some good supercharger kits now that can take this to anywhere from 280-400hp. |

I am with Jeff on the lightweight thing, but disagree that the Cayman/Boxster S lacks power. What it lacks is torque, not power, which makes driving on the street less exciting (same with a M3 btw). But on the track or the twisties where you are high up in the rev range, the power in those cars are not left wanting for more. So my choice is the Boxster Spyder (not that it was really a replacement for the 135i for me).

Only thing I am considering now is the Cayman S... but worried about the lack of torque I am used to! I actually went to the Porsche dealer as my wife is dreaming about a boxter, and I said that I love the Cayman to the sales guy, but my car is faster. He said to me "no it isn't"...
One thing I hate about car salesman, they don't know squat about their competition. He said it twice to me, because I slightly argued the point but couldn't be bothered telling him off. |

i would be looking at a M1 if it ever comes out, or a Porsche of some sort. My wife always wants a 911 Turbo, she thought it's cute(??). I am replace her car to a GT in two years time instead though .

for a toy the spyder is a weapon, WAY i am really jealous, however i feel for the money, and as i don't have access to a shitload of it until the mortgage is gorn, a second hand gt3 would really hit the spot. i saw one the other day at eastern creek and it blew me away how quick it went past me through the bends. i'm now in love and buying a lotto ticket.
speaking of toys anyone seen these on car sales, this would make a nice track toy, but you need a trailer which is a pain, but not too much cash if you write it off! http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/...s=17&silo=1011 |

Yes I hate this too. Car technology has advanced so much that in the $70k+ bracket there basically aren't any bad cars, just different ones for different tastes/requirements, so I find it particularly irritating to walk into one brand's showroom and when asked what else I have looked at, get the "Oh, our X is FAR better than their Y, you'd never want one of those" line. One BMW dealer I visited for the 135i lost my business when he basically told me that my 986 Boxster was a crap car.
