Garage List
2011 BMW 135i  [10.00]
N55 Vargas Stage 2 DBB Turbo Pump Gas Dyno

Note: This is a low reading dyno dynamics dyno, don’t just look at the final number LOOK AT THE DELTA!

So PTF finished my pump gas map and I had a chance to chuck the car on the dyno.

This is the same dyno I used when stock and after my first round of power mods so you can see a good comparison.

Car is a 2011 DCT 135i

Red Line: 230whp/260wtq
Fuel: 100ron with 10% ethanol (94 in the US)
Bone Stock

Green Line: 300whp/375wtq
Fuel: 100ron with 10% ethanol (94 in the US)
JB4 on Map 5
ER intercooler and charge pipe
K&N Filter
BMS downpipe
Custom resonated 2.5” midpipes
Magnaflow muffler

Blue Line: 350whp/362wtq
Fuel: 98ron (93 in the US)
As above plus
PTF protune instead of JB4
Vargas Stage 2 Dual Ball Bearing Turbo
3” muffler delete
Walbro 465 in tank low pressure fuel pump

Most impressive is the difference above 5000rpm, the stock turbo falls off hard but the Vargas holds strong until after 6500rpm.
So even though Tony says there’s not much point using his turbo with normal pump gas obviously that’s not the case. You will definitely see better gains with E85 and that is my next step.

Few pics, video and datalogs included.

+120whp over stock baseline on just pump gas! Those are some impressive gains! Congrats and great job. Vargas and PTF do magic yet again!

Let's see E85 next!

Looks good Luke! I wasn't implying you won't see any gains at all with pump gas, as you 100% will, just implying its more likely not worth the price to upgrade as you with pump you can see that much more than with a stock turbo. But this really surprised me, nice delta there! Looking forward to high octane and meth.

IDK why you don't get any credit for moving the 55 platform along. Unless i'm missing something, there is no one else out there right now offering a serious upgrade outside of you. Job well done sir.

I think it has to do with out no nonesense approach to how we talk about things. We have done a lot to be use more discretion on the forums. You are correct, we are the only company on the planet as far as we know offering a real N55 upgrade above a compressor wheel upgrade. Others have been in the works for almost 3 years, and another is being worked on. We just sold out of another batch of the Ball Bearing Stage 2's and we now have the Stage 1's in stock as well. The N55 is in so many models. Its a great platform. Thanks for the kind words!

Depends on the dyno but mid to high 300s. Some people are breaking the 400hp range on the newer N55 with the 4" DPs. This dyno looks like it's reading pretty low as most baseline are closer to 270-290 RWHP

On a Dynojet I would guess this would be around 400 to 420whp given how low the baseline is. This is very similar how an RB N54 would do on pump gas. N55 is starting to impress at last.

The N55 is a very impressive engine but the stock TS turbo just doesn't move enough air for it to make the numbers the N54 does. Now with awesome turbo upgrades coming along(like Tony's) it is going to start to really shine.

This is great! Thanks for the data and information, Nugget....

Curious as to why there isn't a bit more torque; I would've expected to see more.

Allen - does PTF have any information on the N55 DCT units and their ability to hold power. I know one3five is also inquiring as he's getting a custom turbo built and installed @ our local shop and has the same question. I'm sure we'll learn this sooner rather than later with Nuggets testing. Thoughts?

Why is the boost threshold so poor on your baseline (red)? That doesn't look remotely correct.

Personally, I'd be pissed if I got an upgraded turbo and I still only made 350whp

I believe he is only doing this to provide data on this upgrade with pump only gas. Looks like his next step is going to e85 which should really shine with this platform.

And which will certainly kill the DCT.

OP just a heads up unless you looking to buy a new tranny.

AFAIK we still hold the 335i DCT world record at 450rwhp/480rwtq. The car was running SSP clutch packs and it held it really well. Assuming a car is running a turbo capable of holding 500rwtq flat to 6.5Krpms you're looking at +600rwhp. Of course, until that actually happens that is just a thought excersize.

Keep in mind, with a DCT trans it is IMPERATIVE to run a flash tune. Clamping force is relative to reported DME load and a piggyback reporting stock load values will cause slipping issues at higher power levels. Enough slippage can burn the clutches up and be a very expensive repair.

Nice work guys looks like some impressive gains. Good to see this sort of stuff in Australia too well done Luke for going hard!

Whilst the N55 is a brilliant and widely applied platform, its limited by tuning options. That really let's it down overall. I wanted a PTF tune for mine but instead I am happily running a 20/80 E85/93 octane map 5 JB4 instead.

PTF have you guys considered offering Pro tunes for the JB4 as well?
