Another review: "BMW 1M a purist machine"

Same story, different day.

As the only comment re the review correctly stated: "Do all and sundry needs convincing somehow? BMW fans are accustomed to this already and it's only for the rest to own up and admit. Competitors use this brand as a benchmark."

BMW 1M a purist machine

THE BMW 1M once again proves that dynamite comes in small packages. It’s a flashy little ride that created a lot of hype when it was released. Heck, even before its release, it had been the talk of the motoring world for some time.

So when the mighty German steed rumbled into our office parking lot, we all ran outside like overzealous school children trying to get our five minutes with the high school jock. We all wanted to bask in the car’s magnificent glory.
The 1M is the latest BMW to don the mighty M badge, which is rich in performance history and merely throwing the M-word around would make many a driver weak at the knees! Despite being the smallest model in the M-range, there’s nothing puny about this car.

Firepower
Beneath its bonnet beats a fiery 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged powertrain that demands respect. With 250kW of power and 450Nm of torque (500Nm with over-boost) at your disposal, stomping your foot on the accelerator pedal produces a demonic screech from the 1M’s exhausts. Transferring the power straight to the rear wheels, which subsequently rips the rubber from the 19-inch M alloy wheels, before sending it from 0-100km/h in a claimed 4.9 seconds, it then furiously continues on to its limited top speed of 250km/h.

Dynamics
The 1M is a relentless machine as we discovered when we took it around Zwartkops Raceway. Throwing it into the twisty bends, it isn’t shy to flaunt its talents. But beware of the sting in its tail as the traction control button is not to be trifled with.
Hanging its tail out through the corners, it shows its rebellious nature as the traction control warning light constantly flickers on the dashboard like a dying light bulb, which proves just how hard the safety systems have to work to keep the 1M on the black stuff.

Styling
From a styling perspective, everything seems bigger and more flamboyant. The broadly flared wheel arches and the powerfully sculpted body all signify the vehicle’s intent - anarchy!
The German’s certainly have got the right mix of power and agility to create brilliance in this fierce little pocket rocket. And with limited numbers making their way to our shore, they’ve all been sold, unfortunately. However, with some serious searching one could find a second-hand model, but this will come at a significantly higher price than when it was new.
There are a lot of words we could throw around to describe the 1M, like: relentless, powerful, demonic, mischievous, evil, playful or sexy. Whatever you choose, the car has a way of working itself into your bloodstream, waking you up at night in a cold sweat screaming its name. It may be the infant in the M-range, but this 1 Series is a purist’s machine deserving of the M-status.

Yeah, my wife was telling me that the other day, too - her excuse for buying another orange Brora sweater! Apparently, it's all over the fashion mags, they've called orange as the hot colour for 2012!
