Can a 1 M Still Be Had?

When I spoke to my local BMW dealer months ago they did indicate what I guess is "common knowledge", especially for members of this forum: that each dealer had one or two allocations for ordering the 1 Series M and that was it. Yet according to an article here, BMW plans to keep producing the 1 Series M into the spring of 2012, (we are not quite there yet).

Now the date of that article is December 2010 and articles written thereafter - say May 2011 - vaguely indicate otherwise. However, I can still build, price and submit a quote for the 1 Series M on BMW's website. If I didn't know better it would appear that the car was still available for order and purchase.

Are they truly done building the 1 Series M at this time?

They are done for the U.S. It will keep being produced for other countries though. Only way to get one now is to pay big markup at a dealer with one left or buy used.

I have been looking for the past one month. Just purchased a used one this past weekend. Flew all the way to NY to see the car, flew back today, and car was put on the transport truck this morning. Good luck in your search.

Call some M certified dealers and check. It was the same "no more cars" message over here before Christmas. Just since December and forward all certified M-dealers have received a couple of more slots for new cars in 2012. They say its going to be produced until June. So I would not 100% trust the "nay" sayers on this forum. Call and check just to be sure. Nothing to loose but a couple of phone calls..

At this point it is more likely that any BMW NA system and the press are at least weeks behind reality than anybody ordering a US 1M from factory.

You might be right but you're also from Sweden.

Yes in Sweden its a fact. In the US it might be a different story. But if you don't have a car what can you loose by calling some good dealers and check? ;-)

It is a "different story" in the US. A search would end this discussion.

I am following everything about the 1M since July 2010 and I was following this forum since October that year, in January 2011 I became an active member of this very useful and fun forum. It is really a bit complicated to talk about the "availibility" or lack of it about this car since the begining especially for NA and maybe best is to avoid giving any false hopes to newcomers for the 1M market because chances are very slim to say the least. In 2 months we will see if the world production in Leipzig will also end or it will continue till June this year but for the American market it is very very unlikely that any will be allocated. Having said that, I myself as a diplomat was "officially" and in written refused by the BMW direct sales to purchase this car in early 2011 because they said it is a limited producton run; 2 months after that while I was trying to buy one in very indirect ways (like paying all additional taxes and bringing it from another country etc.) I was offered to buy one with no taxes paid (no usual diplomatic discount as well) but it should be send to the country that I would be serving after September (Chile) directly and I accepted that and put a big deposit of 10,000 Euros at that official BMW dealer. The same dealer just a week after putting my deposit called and gave me one of the most surprising and good news of whole 2011, that I could buy it now as a diplomat with usual tax free special prices because there was a change of decision (in the meantime I sent some letters and complaints to BMW headquarters). I might even be the only diplomat who bought this car, anywhere, I don't know. So, surprises happen and happened more than once about the availibility of this particular car and I also would not mind to continue calling some reliable addresses and knock on some doors in BMW NA before buying a marked up used one. Just my experience and my 2c.

I appreciate the responses. The question was posed due to the conflicting information in the various write-ups and the fact that you can still build one and submit a quote on the BMW USA website. I have a BSM 1M and I'm happy with it.

BTW, Juiced 1M - anyone who will spend $84,635 on a 1 M has more money then they do brains. For that price they would get more value purchasing an M3.

Anyone who pays $84k+ for an M3 would have to be officially brain-dead.

Several of the many dealers I spoke to before snagging my 1M offered me M3's for around 60-65k with 0.99 financing.

That's an over simplification. Depends on the M3. A fully optioned M3 would still be worth more than any 1 M at that price. Case in point.

There are two VO's on Ebay right now that are fairly stripped down but they are selling in the low 60's.

No. Whoever will spend $84 on a 1M won't care about money and will pay what it takes to get this amazing car. Just saying.

Not sure about the "more value" part. That's pretty subjective. If you want a 1M, then get a 1M. It's not an M3. I personally didn't want a new-school BMW bloat-wagon.

A 1M is not an M3? Thanks for clearing that up.

When you post over-simplified platitudes, you should expect over-simplified responses.

Hmmm perhaps we are mistaken and that more 1Ms will in fact be built...

http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2012...illennial-set/

And it will be built in red too!
