DCT Steering Wheel

Hello Everyone, there may already be a thread for this, and if so please just point me to it, shame me, and then moderators can delete this one....

What options are out there for replacement steering wheels for DCT cars? My m-sport one is starting to crack at the perforated leather on the left side, since this is where I usually have my hand if i'm cruising down the highway plus the direct sunlight with the window down probably has caused some of the degradation as well.

My first thought was to just get it re-covered, which is still a viable option. Other option I could think of was replacement OEM wheel or replacement wheel from the E9X M3 (I don't remember if this will work since the paddles are different, someone refresh my memory please).

Are there any other options out there we can list? If so then I'll try to keep a running list here in the first post for future peoples.

Are you wanting a custom one? I personally plan on getting one from Nelson Racing Wheels. Otherwise, this seller on eBay always refurbishes M wheels for a decent price. This should be enough for you to get started (I've spent a lot of time planning out all the future mods I want for my e82 )

I don't like all of the super defined (jagged edges) of the thumb rests on most wheels I've seen. Also, it's almost impossible to tell which of the wheels on the eBay site you linked work with DCT cars.

I've messaged the eBay seller, hopefully they can help me out.

I suppose having a 6-speed makes wheel shopping easier , hope you find something that'll work!

How involved is changing the steering wheel on the 128's? My 6 speed 128i could use a new look.

I know on all the Corvettes I've owned, they were kind of a PITA.

The link on eBay has some nice looking reconditioned sport wheels I could live with.

The M ones are nice as well, but I don't have an M car so I wouldn't go that route.

Not too hard from the DIY's I've gone over.

I'm thinking this might be one option. Takes about 4+ hours to install from what I've seen and can be done right on/in the car.

Once I figured out how to remove the airbag, it took about 30 min to change wheels, but mine is MT. Getting the rods to release the airbag took a couple of tries on each side. Also key is making sure battery is disconnected and airbag system is "discharged".

Nice. I have a 6 speed so it looks straightforward. I have a Sport wheel, so maybe something along the lines of the remanufactured sport ones shown on the auction site so that my airbag fits.

May also change out the cover around the airbag as well to freshen it up.

I like the flat bottom thicker wheels. I may email the guy and see if he can do one with stitching that matches my gray color interior.

I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on an alcantara. Want to buy my DCT M-Sport wheel? It's obviously used but in really good shape. PM me

I just last week installed this one: BMW E90 E91 E92 E93 E87 E81 E88 Sport BLACK NAPPA Steering Wheel + M-Stitching -Don't think link will work(?) match description if interested in seeing. Purchased from the Ukraine eBay seller. I paid $400 (not $430),Could not be more pleased/really AMAZING. All leather no Alcantara. Flat bottom. Included paddles (Steptronic) and trim (not air bag).

One of my main issues was, I didn't want to replace my wheel and re-install my marred up "soft touch" center trim piece and I really didn't want to purchase a new OEM one ($130?) only to nick it up again. This wheel purchase included that center trim piece... wrapped in wheel matching leather! Looks fantastic (really looks just like the soft touch as it sorta matte) and I hope/expect it will be less prone to nicks and scuffs. Plus, I had my wheel that I took off and another in the garage, he gave me $149ea on "trade in". Shipping to him for both was $32 since he apparently has a facility stateside in WA. Then I was able to remove the paddles (he didn't want/need) and sell them separately. All in all, this wheel/center trim upgrade will net cost me about $55!

Only down side of dealing with this guy is waiting on shipment. Took about 6 weeks from order date, to get through Customs and arrive at a USPS facility in NY. Then just four more days from NY to delivery in Houston. So about 6.5 weeks in total. Highly recommend.
