1.5 QT of oil down in 5K miles sounds right?
hey folks,
so I changed my oil today and I noticed I was down about 1.5 qts since last time which was 5k miles ago and included 3 track days. does this sound excessive or sounds about right? would appreciate others experience on this

at almost 18k miles - I have never seen a decrease in my engine oil
I'm no pro but it doesn't sound right. Maybe it was the track days.

Just a tad excessive the norm seems to be about 1qt 6000-8000 miles. Though If I were you I'd change my oil after every track session. I do it to be on the safe side as I push my 1er pretty hard on those days.

Every car has Oil Blow-by. Look it up. This causes you to lose some oil over time. I know it's especially bad in direct injection engines such as our N54/55's and audi's FSI's. I am not sure what BMW's acceptable limit is, but I believe on GM's LS3's it's 2qts every 8000 miles or so.

I drive 100 miles per day and drop 1 QT every 7,500 miles like clock work.

that makes a lot of sense! wtf? so if we go by what they say, by the time we take our car in for the first oil change the engine would be toast. typical corporate bs cop out. why am I not surprised...

Yeah it sucks, but the car should tell you when you hit the low oil mark which is normally about a qt. My dealer gave me the first qt free, but said I'd have to buy the others. Free maintenance my ass I guess they consider it a comsumable item like gas and wiper fluid.

Strange I didn't get a warning this time. I had a warning once and I topped it off. Totally forgot about that. So I guess I had lost 2.5 qts

Pixelblue... How many miles are on your 135i ?
I did an oil change at 1,200 miles and then again at 2,400 roughly. Then again at 5K. I used Mobil-1's 0w40 LL-1 euro blend (black label)oil. What I noticed was IF I did alot of high speed autobahn driving... I would burn thru a quart of oil after about 5K miles. After my first three oil changes I swicthed to German Castrol 0w40 LL-4(since I am driving with low sulphur fuels over here). Besides a quieter cold start engine and having the engine sounding smoother or quieter even when warmed up... one other thing I noticed is even though I still drive hard on the autobahn - I don't need or use oil anymore. I am not sure IF this was just because the engine might have been still breaking in or what? Now I have about 20K miles on my car. I have changed the German castrol another three times sice switching over to GC. I think IF you are tracking your car... it might be wise to change the oil before AND after each track day. Just like you should be changing your brake fluid before and after or have a extra set of DE wheels. |

^ I have a little over 9k. I first changed my oil at around 5k with Motul 8100 5W-40 X-Max Synthetic Engine Oil. I remember topping it off once when the warning light came on. was short 1 QT. I did track my car three times during the last 5k. I guess I should change the oil more often. thanks for the feedback

Thanks for pointing out the obvious. I was just saying that if the service writter could make a spelling mistake, he could also have wrongly quoted BMW. I highly doubt BMW would consider that normal oil consumption, seeing as it would leave you with no oil before your first oil change was due.
I have 6k miles on my 08, and I have never changed the oil or tracked the car. The oil level reads FULL. |

^ that would mean I have been running my car twice as hard as yours. with my track days its totally plausible

So how do you know how much oil to add? If the computer reads 3/4 full, does that mean I need 1.75 quarts added? I hate not having a proper oil dipstick
