Help with strange type of paint chip!

Hi everyone,

I was washing the car yesterday and noticed a really strange paint "chip" on the back of the car, right beside the license plate. It doesn't appear to be a normal "chip" per se, and I'm not even sure how this area of the car would ever get chipped.

I've uploaded a picture of it here:

Any insights? Is it possible that it's a paint defect?

It doesn't look like a paint defect to me. It looks like a rock chip to me. Perhaps it was thrown by lawn equipment while it was parked.

Sorry it happed to you...I hate when chips happen. Just goes to show you can't have anything nice...someone always messes it up for you.

If you decide you want to try and fix it yourself you may want to check out drcolorchip.com. They sell small kits of matching paint and a compound that lets you flush the paint you dap into the chip. I've used it on my SUV and it worked pretty well on chips.

Looks like the lid was painted before. You can see a 2nd layer of paint under the first. That's why it looks weird.

Looks more like (from the center of the impact) bare metal, primer, color coat and clear coat. Definitely impact damage, and you can either repaint, find a quality airbrusher or try touch up paint.

Looks like you got hit by a shopping cart to me. That sucks man...BMW sells touchup kits that include clearcoat and new paint. Ive used it a few times and it works well.
