Oh this is embarrassing

A little off track excursion at Thunderhill. It's amazing how the grass got everywhere. I'm still picking grass out of the a/c vents and headliner. I guess that's better than having to pick a body shop though.

Greasy tires, early turn-in, and too much throttle = bad news.

I had a split second of pucker factor as it corrected back toward the wall, and then you brought it back toward the grass. Good save and glad you and the car are fine given the situation.

I guess the only embarrassing part was that the S2000 that waved you by came around the turn to see you in the grass.

oh man, good save, almost sh*t my pants there when it almost went head first into the wall. Little grass cleans right out!

Good job on not hitting the wall. That being said watching your hands in the corner it looks like you over corrected each time. That wasn't that big of a slide and was very catchable. Skid pad time will help you with that for next time

^Agreed. Ugh I can only imagine the grassy clean up... Way better than the body shop though that's for sure! You can hear the tires let go pretty early into the turn.

They say there are two ways drivers can get fast. First, observe, interpret and feel out the line and limitations of the car/yourself slowly and progressively pushing harder/learning. Second, sort of like being pushed in the pool to learn how to swim. Fast, reckless and risky. Drive hard right off the bat and from your mistakes you will learn. Pretty much the opposite of what any good driving instructor will ever say, but I would argue it works.

Yep I should have caught it and I have done the same thing on that corner before. This time though I turned in just a fraction too early and my entry speed being about 2mph faster than normal caused a little more wheel spin than I anticipated. I tried to stay consistent with the throttle so I could power out of the turn, but it sounded like I let off just a hair which just magnified the back coming out. Well all of that and thinking about all of the other cars I've seen hit that wall I may have just quit on the turn. I remember thinking to myself whatever you do DON'T HIT THE WALL!

The funny thing is I went home and treated her to a bath, cleaned the inside out so my wife wouldn't get freaked out, and went about my business. Two days later my wife and I went to dinner and I turned on the defroster and out shot grass from every vent. Busted! She was like what the hell was that?

This was what I was going to say - definitely sounded like an ill-timed (but normal human reaction) lift.

What a stud!! I wasn't going to comment because giving advice on driving over the internet seems so entitled to me, but that lift is what really killed you. You got up on the curb a little bit, I'm not sure if more than usual, but you also said you were going a little faster which could amplify it's effects. Sometimes you can read that curb and be ready for it unsettling the car. Sorry, I just got so excited when you corrected others pointed out your own mistake!!

Edit: I just rewatched the video, just a little tidbit on going over a curb at high speeds like that, if you actually straighten the wheel very quickly and very smoothly for the split second you hit the curb, it won't unsettle the car like that. And BTW great story with the wife!!

How can I get more skid pad time? I've only done it once with the Porsche Club and it lasted 5 or 10 minutes max. It wasn't long enough to really learn car control. Any ideas about setting it up on my own? A deserted parking lot or something?

Deserted parking lot i wouldn't recommend unless it was recently sealed and it was raining. Really the best thing you could do it talk to the local installation about renting it out. Set up a day to rent it for a few hours and get a local group of friends to go check it out. Skid pads have a special sealant on them that makes them super slick when wet. Way less grip and any wet road surface. If you go for a track day and it's raining...not a bad idea to head over to the empty skid pads and do some time on your own there too if you get lucky
