For those that burned through your runflats- what tires did you choose next?
that is if you didn't stick with the RFT's.
I'm thinking about not going with them this next round after reading a lot of supposed "expert" insight. I'm curious if anyone else here put different rubber on your wheels and if so... what'd you choose? My only concern is potential for blowouts. I live in florida, so an all-season tire is not necessary... I also have a seperate set of wheels with track rubber (R compounds). So safety for those triple digit jaunts is all I need. One of the biggest arguments for RFT's is the "it saved my life" when the light came on when I was doing 100+" or "I know someone that blew out a tire and crashed... if he had RFT's"... If some of the better performance tires are no higher risk than RFT's... than I see no reason at all to buy RFT's again.

so those do fit? I haven't looked at specific measurements yet. I just started doing my research today and have only looked at what options Tirerack offered for our car. They only had some hancooks, yokohama's and bridgestone g-force...

I just put a set of Kumho Ecsta XS's on my WRX this summer and I am loving them so far.

It really depends what you're looking for.
I got dunlop direzza z1 star specs on my car because they have excellent grip, and in your case meet a high-speed standard. But then again, at a treadwear rating of 200, they aren't going to last you 20,000 miles. If the low treadwear rating doesn't bother you, Star Specs all the way!

Wow... Lol I was hoping to see more of a common consensus! I like the idea of the hancooks... Thrifty, but is it a classic case of getting what you pay for?
Star specs, hancooks and.yoko's seem to be the most common answer, but I haven't really heard a bad thing about some of the lesser mentioned tires either...

Sumitomo HTR-ZIII here...I freakin' love them. I forgot what real tires felt like. Honestly, they wouldn't be my first or second choice for performance but a great buy for those that put many miles on your car and can't justify dropping a grand or more every summer...

I'm still on my original RFTs with almost 17,000 miles on them. I know when I had the Acura RSX-Type S (2004 model) I was using BF Goodrich G-Force, and it was a great tire. Cost around $450 for the set. I'm in a similar dilemna, I don't know what to go to either. I'm in Florida as well, and in many, many years have never gotten a flat tire, so I see the RFTs as unnecessary. Good luck in what you choose.....

I have 19K on my car (19 months old) but about 5K of that is on my Dunlop Wintersport M3's. Im definitely replacing the stock RFT's with non rft's. Probably gonna go with Kumho or Sumitomo's. I am looking forward to seeing how much better the car rides without these crappy RFT's. I have a mobility kit so I'm not too worried about driving around without a spare. My 2004 VW R32 did not come with RFT's or a spare and simply a mobility kit and I never had a problem.

The BMW Mobility Kit is an air compressor with a supposedly safe tire repair gel (sealant) to attach to it.

Get the Dunlop Star Specs. I have them- they rock! The only other tires I would've gone with over these are the Bridgestone Re-11 or the Yokohama Advan Neova AD07, but they are not near as good value for money.

Honestly, with how low a profile these tires are, a blow out will not be as much an issue as those with 75 series tires on SUVs or trucks. The worst you might be looking at is chewing up your wheel lip a bit or just scaring the hell out of yourself when it does blow. A lot of people over-react to a blow out and that is the major issue at hand.
As for tire choice, I am in the same dilemma as you are right now. I think I have narrowed it down to the Sumitomo HTR-ZIII or the Dunlop Direzza Star Spec. The latter of the two would be for a longer lasting tire. I have heard nothing but good things about both of these choices. In about another 2,000-3,000 miles, when my stock rears hit the wear indicators, I will have to make that decision. |
