The Valentine 1, IMHO is the best all around detector, it has the arrows which are very useful. And it has great range.

The better detectors are not cheap but they can last a long time and give you very good protection from the "fuzz".

I'd still stick with the V1. The Escort isn't that much ahead of it in terms of distance. My buddy actually just got nailed yesterday doing 115 in his 2011 Aplina B7 using the Escort Redline. He says he'll never leave the V1 in his 911 again

I agree. I own a V1, and have for 10 years.

But, I have seen many many tests on distance and the Redline is the best and not by a little.

Even a V1 with custom sweeps can't top the Redline.

I think your friend would have got nailed regardless of using the V1 or Redline.
Some people own both and use the Redline for highway use only.
