I just tell them straight up, "because it offers a more involving driving experience".

Here's where gender is handy. I'm a small shapely woman and I wanted a small shapely car Actually only one person has asked me that question. Overall I find that other BMW owners often comment positively, give a thumbs up, etc. (even to a 128i)! My intent was to get a 3 series coupe but I loved the size of the 128i.

Who cares what others think or say. I buy my cars cause I am an enthusiast and enjoy driving. It just so happens that the 1 is a great driving experience. I chose it over the 3 for that reason, and I love the design.

I don't know why you have to respond to that. Anyone who asks such question obviously does not know about 1 series. If I really have to say something, I say,"3 series is as common as Honda Accord or Toyota Camry." I just traded my 2008 135 last month, and I have seen less than 20 cars (maybe a few of same cars for multiple times) so far. I see more than 20 3 series in a day. Also, I still got a compliment from other drivers a few months ago after owning it for about 3 years.

This is really silly.
In my life I have owned a driven a 1, 3, 5, and a 7 series BMW. They all served a particular purpose during a specific point in time.
I don't really need the room anymore so I chose the 1. It is the personal experience that matters the most. People seeking larger numbers on thier boot lid as a way to obtain attention is just plain stupid and not true enthusiasts. The 1 series is as back to basics BMW you can get, and I am very glad vain BMW attention seekers don't get it. It simply spoils the brand.

My boss said to me "hey, isnt the 1series a poor mans BMW??" I asked him what he drove..His response "a MINIVAN"!! Nuff said...
I also had 3 series remorse until I drove my friends 2012 335X..this was my first time in one since I got my 1er..Now I know when what the 1er drivers mean when they say its too big and the controls are too far..it made me fall in love with my 1er all over again...I just wish I could do something about the front lip to make it more aggressive..oh well I am sure that there will be a 1M body kit retrofit soon enough

I had a 2008 335 and really liked it. Came time to trade it in and took the 135 for a test drive and fell in love with the DCT.... I'd simply say let me take you for a ride!

my 335 sedan had the feeling of pivoting around my hips when i took a corner. when i replaced that car with an AMG and then wanted another 335 i decided i wanted a coupe. so i went a test drove the coupe and something about the longer doors made the car feel awkward to me. but i was just going to buy it anyway. just as im starting to work numbers with the dealer i see a 135 on the sales floor. i decided to take it for a test drive and fell in love. ive had a few people ask me why i didnt get the 3 and i tell them to drive the two and then tell me which one they would pick. the 1 is so much more alive than the 3. also i live in L.A. and a 3 series here is like a civic in the rest of the world. even though technically the 1 is cheaper, you see a lot less of them. i just had a 328 loaner car and i can appreciate it for what it is, but in my50 unit apartment building alone there are like 15 e9x's.

I tell them - "Why did I buy a 1-series over a 3-series? Because I like cars that are small. Like your manhood."

Please.... I've owned two Miatas. Any 1 Series stigma is nowhere near the Miata's.

Pretty much ditto what most of you said...
I have a 2011 135i M-Sport and have gotten, "That's the lowest BMW, right?" or "Why didn't you just get the 335i?". My previous car was a 2008 335i Sport that I traded in for the 2011 135i M-Sport and I considered it an upgrade in all aspects of performance, albeit a slight downgrade in comfort, luxury and size, which I was more than happy to sacrifice. So obviously, I could have bought another 335i but i found the 135i way more enjoyable. Even still, I got a lot of "Isn't that a downgrade from your 335i?" For the car-ignorant, I just respond with "Yup, it is downgraded." because they won't understand how the 1 is better simply because its slotted lower in the BMW hierarchy and is priced lower (barely) no matter how you explain the lower weight, compact size, 7 speed DCT, big Brembos, same engine and wheel/tire sizes as the bigger/heavier 335i, etc. |
