Best Drives on NorCal?

I'm anticipating getting my 135 at the end of the month, and I'm looking forward to taking it out for some open the windows, turn off the radio, and enjoy the drive cruises.

People want to share their favorite cruise routes? I'm looking for everything from twisties in the mountains to rolling coastal hills where I can open the car up a little. Preferably something WITHOUT bicyclists and minimal bikers.

Also, I remember seeing a lot of car commercials wih rolling coastal drives that I have to assume are in California somewhere. Any suggestions for things like this?

My favs thus far:
- Skyline from the Peninsula to Los Gatos
- Mount Hamilton near San Jose
- Panoramic Hwy near Stinson Beach

NorCal is a driver's paradise. I can't think of a better place to drive a 1 or a better car for NorCal roads (I may be biased:biggrin. In short, I'd say "head for the hills!" You can't go wrong.

Here's a list of my favorites:
  • Skyline Blvd in Oakland/Berkeley Hills
  • Redwood Road, from Skyline Blvd (Oakland) to Castro Valley
  • Napa and Sonoma wine country
  • Hwy 1, Marin Country to Medicino County
  • Hwy 101, Willits to Oregon border
  • Hwy 211 (CA's "Lost Coast" --quite a few car commercials shot there)
  • Hwy 36 (famous for it's twisties)
  • Hwy 299, Arcata to Redding
  • Hwy 44, Redding to Mt. Shasta to Susanville (empty with lots of variety)
  • Sears Point (I mean Infineon Raceway)
  • Thunderhill Park Raceway
Cheers!

Calaveras Road is a good favorite of mine. Go there anytime between 11-2 and it's a blast!

Skyline is a fun drive but watch out for young kids in small sports cars that all think they can drive like they are in the movies and that the laws of physics just don't apply to them. Seen some NASTY results from this group up there...Personally, I love a mid week run up highway 50 from Sacramento to Tahoe. The ride up Mt. Tam is great with wonderful views, from San Anselmo out to Point Reyes, Through Anderson Valley to Mendocino is really nice too. A really fun and (used to be, not sure if it still is) seldom used road is the back road from Napa (using Monticello Road (off of Silverado Trail) to Wooden Valley Road (which turns into Suisun Valley Road which will eventually run you right by Solano Community College and on to I-80) into Fairfield. That is a lot of fun and very little traffic usually. Use Google Earth and you'll see it. There are several great drives in the bay area. All kinds of cool drives through the mountains between Tahoe and Yosemite. I would highly recommend you try that drive from Napa to Fairfield if you are in the area and looking for a good 30 mins run on the twisties. I used to teach in Napa and lived in Fairfield when my wife was stationed at Travis AFB and drove this road almost every day...LOTS of fun!! If possible, avoid weekends though as you tend to get a lot of motorcycles. You can also stay on Monticello (road 121) (not turning into Wooden Valley) and continue past Lake Berryessa and hit 505 in Winters, then you could head south to I-80. Lots of optoins! I miss the Bay Area...not as much as home (San Diego) but living in Europe is lots of fun too!! Hope you enjoy some of these. If you do the drive from Napa to Fairfield or Winters, let me know what you think.

I did the HWY 9 drive toward Santa Cruz through the Santa Cruz mountains. I turned onto Bear Creek Road (at Boulder Creek) and took that to HWY 17. Very nice drive. If you wanted to extend it you could turn onto 35 before getting to HWY 17 and head back west.
