Radar jammers are illegal, radar detectors are not. I had a Valentine 1, that is, IMO, the best there is out there. The directional arrows are the best feature available on any detector, and the range was better than my friends Passport 8500 at the time, we did a side by side comparo. However, now that I no longer have one, I dont see the need for one, not to mention if you get pulled over with one of them on your window you will be getting a ticket.

Valentine and Passport are the most famous. Although not illegal, some cops get pretty ticked off when people have them lol

I just got the Escort 9500i. It is the only detector with GPS so you can lockout false alarms, set speed trap warning and also use it as a digital speedo. So far I love it.
If the Valentine would come out with GPS, I would have gotten it...but I absolutely hate false alarms. |

I've had the V1, RX65, and 9500i. I just sent back my 9500i and am back with the V1. I found I really like the Arrows on the V1..... I like to know where the source of the radar is. The 9500i is very nice, but I guess once your a Zombie.......always a Zombie!!!!!

Plus 1 for the Valentine one. I have one installed on my is350 and its very accurate and has great range. I did buy a Cobra (360 coverage) from radio shack for my Tundra. And I have to tell you for $79 bucks spent its not bad in detection and the ability to pick up from the rear. Maybe its because its higher up in a truck....but it was over $300 bucks saved over buying another V1.
my 2c ! B-MAN PS 1 IN ROUTE. Delivery June- 08 .....yeah!

I'm thinking of picking up a detector but I don't like any additions.. I'm more of a flush mount hidden installation type of guy.

I had a V1 but on 405, the road I travel the most, cops don't lay speed traps. They pace you instead so V1 is helpless there. On the other hand, V1 is brilliant on the 5 between LA and SF.

Um, just thinking out loud here, but, observing the speed-limit will eliminate any requirement for the vaunted Valentine V1.:iono: To be fair, having said that, I live in a semi-rural environment providing ample opportunity for 'spirited' driving, including sorties dipping into the upper roams of Mexifornia territory. On populated public roads, however, I absolutely observe posted speed limits, and/or, prevailing flow.
Another thing I have been experimenting-with is, people notice the 135, as a result, I acknowledge their existence, for no other reason, than to dispel the perception of the 'typical BMW' owner, whatever that means. Well, OK, we all know what THAT means. We aren't those guys.

I don't drive excessively fast, but I certainly don't do 65 on the freeway at all times. I know my friends and family have gotten pulled over for being in the 7x mph range.. Radar detectors aren't only for those that want to break the lightspeed barrier

Driving without radar detector is not safe nowadays. While cruising at 80mph is typical for bay area freeways, I just try to avoid becoming the *lucky* winner who gets the ticket. Hardwire V1 installation was my first mod for 135i.

Bought V1 in 2004 and no tickets ever since. Saved me from 10+ speeding tixs. But you shouldn't speed. Obey the speed limit...uh part of the time.

I just bought a V1 and I'm very happy with the workmanship.
I don't race on public roads and I don't use other people as pylons for a nice slalom on the way to work. However, I'll hit 10mph over just getting past a truck quickly on the interstate. With the 135 that will probably be 20mph until I learn to keep it down. I don't want to get busted for things like 'surprise.. construction zone', or '(thinking) schedule and budget, work plan, contractor dependencies.. speed? what speed?' I really try to be a safe driver but sometimes that means speeding. Other times speeding is reasonably safe and you feel like it. If I didn't like going fast (or if I had patience), I wouldn't have gotten a 135. Also.. you will get a ticket if you're pulled over with a detector. In a small Texas town I got 'well, you're radar detector didn't help you that time, did it?'. I chose not to reply but there was a momentary temptation to tell him (inaccurately) that I primarily used it for school zones. |
