end of break-in period;now what
I'll hit 1200 miles today on my 2013 135i. I've been patient, only hitting over 5000 rpms a couple of times. I know not to go to redline yet, but what is safe after 1200 miles? Is it safe now to floor in off of a stop, and OK to go to about 6000 rpms?

Into a wall?
In all seriousness I'm quickly approaching 1200 miles and I'll be doing an oil change right around then. |

Start enjoying my new favorite pastime... blasting around side roads with the windows down, enjoying the music of the motor and exhaust! I just hit 1700 miles and still haven't tried the launch control...

Ok, I didn't know the car actually came with launch control. Now I just need a place to test this out.

First, fluid swap for the engine, trans, and diff. After that I would break in the rest of the RPMs over 50 miles.

I am not joking when I say this. I left the bmw dealership slipping the clutch and flooring it aka getting sideways right onto a main boulevard. 3 miles on the odometer. It is a lease and I think break in is bullshit. They break the motors in while they test them at the factory.

do you guys really think an oil change is necessary at 1200 miles? i personally don't think so....but is there any evidence that it really makes any difference?
i have friends who have done early oil changes and even sent the oil for analysis....and have found nothing but oil within the 'normal' range. |

Look at the oil when you drain it at 1200 miles. see the metal shavings? Those aren't good for moving parts. From quads and dirtbikes to cars, i've seen it in virtually every new motor after the break in process. Oil changes are cheap and easy, it takes an hour of your time and taking the shavings out with it.

I've never done an oil change at 1,200 previously, I usually waited until 7,500 or so. I also didn't change the transmission fluid or diff at all, but they were all leased cars.
As I plan on keeping this one for a long time, I'm going to change the oil and transmission shortly after 1200 - certainly can't hurt. I plan on installing a Quaife before 30K miles, so I'm not bothering with the diff at this time. |

Its not just the engine that you need to "break in" but also the clutch. I would start to use more and more revs. Always once the engine is fully warmed up! Try shifting at 5K for a few days, then 6K and so on... Also I would still vary your revs and try to lift off the throttle, at high revs when ever you can. Also try using the clutch faster and faster - over the next 1K miles. No real fast shifts for now... just vary your shifting speed over the next few miles.
Btw... I changed my oil and filter at 500 miles, 1,200 miles, 2,400, and 5K. Then I changed it every 5K miles or so from then on. I did not change my trans oil or diff oil until 30K miles. But once I did, I wished I would have changed it sooner. Especially the diff fluid - it looked pretty nasty. Dack
