Is OE 5W-30 for the N52?
The interval you are suggesting is certainly nice, if anything a bit overkill for full syn. Feel free to get an oil report but unless you track your car, you could likely extend the OCI to more like 5-6K and it would be totally fine. That's still a pretty frequent swap of full syn.

You might not be able to maintain your oil pressure with a 5w-20. It is definitely not approved for your car. Need to choose an LL-01 oil. 5w-30, 0w-30, 5w-40 or 0w-40.
I would go with a Mobil 1 or Castrol 0W-40. Pennzoil does make a Euro 5W-40 you can get on amazon for a decent price. |

I buy Mobil 1 0-40W European formula from Walmart for about $25 for a 5 qt. It's the cheapest BMW approved oil I am aware of.

Speaking of that, the Mobil 1 is on sale at O'Reilly for $5.99/quart until the end of April.

Perhaps but I don't think Castrol 0W-40 is on BMW's approved list. I think it shows:
Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30 So if BMW has that one, it would be a viable option.

I replaced the 5-20 for 5-30, really there is not enough of a difference from this oil to long life 0-30 oil for our cars, especially since I change every 3000 miles.. this is pennzoils top oil.. if it will cause engine problems.. someone better convince me with the facts..

Consensus seems to think that's overkill.

Changing your oil every 3000 miles is a complete waste, unless you do nothing but very short trips (<5 miles) and have excessive idling. With a proper LL-01 oil, you could easily go 7-8,000 miles and have a well protected engine. By the way, Pennzoil's top oil is Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40. You can get it on Amazon with free delivery and ~$35 per 6 quarts if you subscribe. It has more OE approvals than just about any oil out there (Mobil 1 being the other). I use BMW recommended oil in our BMWs but last Saturday, I changed an older BMW at a "free" oil chage event at our church and they gave me Car Craft 5W30 so I used it. Not even close to meeting current recommendations but I don't know what was recommended when that car was made and it was all we had. I used a Car Craft filter too, which seemed to fit OK. I hope it works out for the owner, she sings in the choir with us.
I mention this not to suggest you do the same but to illustrate that clean fresh oil in the right volume is a good thing for a motor - even if it isn't synthetic. Especially in a motor with some miles, keeping it full of clean oil is the first goal, correct oil would also be nice, of course.

Why not the Mobil 1 0-40W from Walmart? It is inconvenient that the good price is for the 5 qt but even if you buy a 5qt plus a couple quarts it won't be $52. The 5 qt is about $25.

Yeah, I forgot oil is so expensive in Canada. I would recommend looking at Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40 on Amazon. Not sure if the price is different for you, but if you watch it week-to-week, you can score it for around ~$32 for six quarts with subscription ( which you can cancel at any time) and free shipping.

I purchased Mobil 1 0-40W on line for in store pickup the first time I bought it. I think it was in stock at that store because it was available instantly. But I didn't have to drive there and look. Even if they have to ship it, they deliver to the store for nothing. Check it out on-line.
