Minimum requirement will be a twinturbo on a N55 (as Scott had said), or if better, a twinscroll twinturbo.

It sounds alright, but the GTR definitely sounds more like a beast. Still it's only early days.
I honestly wouldn't mind if it were mechanically very similar with bigger, better turbos. The ASR turbo upgrade for the N54 maintains 500rwhp from 5.8-7k, limited by fueling, with full boost at 2.5k. As long as the car has a flat, or nearly flat, torque curve up to and over 6,500, I'm fine. Peak power at 6.5k is acceptable, and would still make a fun motor to use.

I buy ALL my cars from a dealer I know would never do that, so I feel secure.

I just had a thought:
BMW is soon going to release a new top range diesel engine to rival the other V8 diesels, but it is going to be an I6 Tri-Turbo with over 350 PS and 800 Nm. What if the M1 or next M3 get such gazoline I6 Tri-Turbo based on the N55?

I don't think it's going to be the 1M, but a good chance with the next M3?

1991 BMW E30 M3 Sport Evolution with a 2.5L I4 and 238hp ran a 8:17.xx.......

I'm pretty sure the 1M will not dissappoint.

Do you have any links to this tri-turbo diesel engine??? Sounds very interesting indeed!

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but that site quotes a 335i coupe at 8:26. I understand that 335's have a longer wheelbase than 135's which would help on a course like the Nordschleife, but 13 seconds sure seems like a lot. What gives?

It ran a "full" lap for that time, and the driver was not a professional. Same driver managed 8:31 with a Cayman S.

^^^^All timed laps are full laps, the main point is that it was not a professional driver, and it was with traffic. In reality I suspect the times for a 335i and 135i are very similar, i.e. ~8.26...

Love to watch Chris Harris in action, boy can that dude drive.

I think it was hard for him to just sit shotgun, instead of drive, as he was clearly born to do!

[-CHRIS, if you are reading this, get a hold of the car man, and film the entire exercise!]

Man, I really hope as others noted that the exhaust note is a work in progress...as best I could tell from the low quality audio, it doesnt sound any different than my stock 135i under acceleration.

Which disappoints because i was hoping there would be something us 1er folks could scavenge to get more of the M sound.

Is this normal (see highlighted section)?

Could this be carbon fibre roof installed/cut out?

First 1/4 mile is so so boring! Time will tell if the ///M division can overcome heat soak on this little monster and HPFP failures. If BMW only installs a 6 speed manual; the 1M won't touch a M-DCT M3 on the track, but then it depends on the driver!

That's one of the most bizarre statements I've read on this site....

Many different motorsports during the past 40+ years have been dominated by lower revving turbo-charged engines......

And as far as European manufacturers are concerned, legislation means it has to be the future.
BMW have already now killed off the n/a ///M V10 this month, and the n/a ///M V8 in the E92 M3 will die when that model is replaced.

Those Peugeot 908 and Audi R15 drivers must be bitterly complaining then, of positively unhealthy and uninspiring sounding engines with a 4800rpm redline, while they annihilate any and all other competitors out of corners.....with 885lb/ft of torque.....

I'm just sayin.....
