Resale on previous year manufacture

So, im in the process of buying a second hand BMW car and an issue came up with 1 vehicle i was looking at.

It is advertised as a 2010 and MY2010, yet further investion through REVS and the BMW vin checker puts it with a build date of Nov 2009 (i do realise this meets the BMW MY2010 criteria). In my and my father's opinion (he was a previous car dealer) the cars value at trade in would be based on 2009. Fair trading NSW and VIC states that the manufacture year of a car is determined when the engine is mounted to the chassis.

I know when i bought my 135i i paid the deposit in Oct 2009 and deliberately asked for a Jan 2010 build (March 2010 delivery) to avaid this.

Any further opinions or knowledge on this would be appreciated...

Ok, but chanches are for resale with a dealer on trade in they would treat it as a 2009?

Dealer spill it both ways. They sell it to you as a 2010 and buy as an 09, just be aware of that going in.

Its another year old now anyway in 7 odd days so remember that as well.

I don't really see your issue as being an issue. There are more important factors to a car's value than production date.
Nah your missing my point. Would you a pick a Nov 2009 build MY2010 over a Jan 2010 MY2010 even if it was less kays?

Im not comparing vehicles actually built in the same year, the one im referrring to is build the previous year but has the same MY.

If it was first registered in 2010, i wouldn't care when it was made.

In my opinion build year rules. The average punter when buying a used car wants to know the year the car was made, which is the year it was built, MY, as I know it, means Model Year.

Oh yeh, I understood that all 1Ms were MY10 BUT had MY11 updates (headlights) as they started prod in march/April 2010 before the MY updates. Maybe wrong but.

Yeah ok at least someone agrees with what i think. Build year is realistically what a dealer will calculate trade in's etc on. They would probably sell it to you as a MY10 even though it was built in 2009, but when it came time for resale would be based on the 2009 build year.

When you do REVS and VIN checks on these vehicles that were built the previous year to their MY, they still come up as 2009 builds. In all my research on it so far Aust Fair Trading laws state that the manufacture date of a car is when the engine is mounted to the chassis, irrespective of what the car manufacturer wants to call it.

I appreciate everyones inputs, has helped my thoughts!

I agree, build year is what is counted. You can still find a brand new Evo VIII in some Mitsubishi dealers, I wouldn't be paying full price for a 2011 registration MY08 car!

If the car is what you want, use it to your advantage to negotiate a better price, especially if it's been sitting there for a while, they'll want it gone.

In Australia, dealers, Registration people, insurance all count date of compliance at least for new cars - i.e. when it came into the country.

As such, if the Compliance Date is 01/2010 I would consider it a 2010.

That said I will take a 2010 over 2009 everyday even with a few more kms, a month makes a huge difference in value for the first few years.

Cars in Australia go on the Compliance Date not the Build date. I wouldn't worry about it man. If they want to say, 'well its an 09', tell them to stick the '09... What matters is that u enjoy it while ya got it

Whats the actual Compliance date anyways?

Untrue about registration going by compliance date in Qld. Goes by build date. My E89 Z4 first registered in June 2010, built Sept 2009, compliance March 2010 has a rego label with 2009 as the year on it.

My son had same with a Mitsubishi.

I am trying to trade the car at the moment, BMW sees it as a 2009...................
Salesman will try & sell it as a 2010 no doubt.

BMW's (& other imports) can sit in the bond store for a while before being complianced & moved along. Basically BMW wanted the car moved along after about 6 months (most manufacturers do that - it's when you see quite a few demos on the market all of a sudden), hence the compliance.

My 10/09 N54

Hi

Are we sure that BMW actually produced any 135i MY10 cars with the N54 engine package????? My understanding is that only N55 cars had a MY10 build code.

My Car is a November 2009 build and march 2010 delivery, but all the insuranace companies and even BMW finance call it a MY09 car?
