19 x 8.5 +40 fitment
Anyone have experience with this size in the Rear?
19 x 8.5 +40 I am currently running 19 x 9.5 +45 and was wondering if the above size would fit a bit better under the Fenders. I am more worried about the inside part of the wheels/tires rubbing on the suspension. I am deployed right now, so I cannot measure this space myself |

Thats gonna fit worse than your +45s. +40 will move the wheel out towards the fenders, even more rubbing than you probably have now. Ideal fit for 9.5 inch wheels is +62. Thats about as close as you can go to the shock without problems.

I understand this offset it pretty aggressive for our cars, but shouldn't the 1 inch downgrade even out the -5 ET difference? I mean the car comes stock with a 8.5" in the rear, albeit a higher offset, but quite tucked under fenders I only have rubbing on really huge bumps or with 2+ passengers. |

My bad! I missed that completely. You'll be fine with an 8.5 yes. A +40 on an 8.5 would actually be a little further away from the fender. I doubt you'd see any rubbing.

I'm really just trying to get rid of the stretched tire / non flush look. Plus not many 9" wheels out there that are readily available or that affordable. And it seems a 255 tire is still feasible on that size wheel. Thanks for the input |

and then my question becomes why do you need 19s? It seems like every car, people want to 1 up rim sizes by an inch... got 18s? Nope not good enough, need 19s... Got 19s... nope need 20s. Even though you're sacrificing performance.
I always thought for looks 17s and 18s were the best on modern cars. Above that it starts to look overdone... But then again i will never understand why the whole stretched tire thing and "hellaflush" crap is appealing to anyone. Lets take a sports car and destroy every aspect of its performance by making it look like a retarded 4 year old designed it. Theres a reason muscle cars have small wheels when you could easily fit 24s in there. /Rant. |

I think the 135i should have had the option for 19's; I mean take a look at the 1M coupe, E92's, or even the older E46 M3. They look just as natural with that extra 1 inch. An no one is really putting 'dubs' or whatever on our cars anyways. The extent some people go with those rubber band tires is ludicrous. But a lot of these normal bigger wheels upgrade, weight close to, if not less than OEM wheels. So how is that minimal difference destroying whole performance of the car? The 5 profile less on tires, or bit extra weight on them(vs the RFTs) going to make such a difference? It's usually quite an upgrade. I just meant that my current VMR wheels stick out past the fender @ 9.5". That's why I plan I going with a thinner wheel to try bring the car back to more of an OEM look Last edited by Ivan_Sal; 07-19-2013 at 10:38 PM.. |

19s vastly limit your tire size possibilities without fender work... You can go with 285s on 18s, you'd be lucky to get 255 on 19s and that would be with a scary low profile tire.

Just wanted to mention keeping in mind tire width, I didn't see it discussed. Tire width matters more than wheel width (to a point of course). If you're just barely rubbing maybe -10mm tire width would solve it and let you keep the wheels you have if you like them.
Otherwise swapping the same tire over to new wheels won't gain you anything, especially if the offset puts things even closer to the trouble spot. Just keep it in mind. |

That would depend on the offset's and width of the wheels. I've seen people run 265s on Alufelgen wheels with no issues, at stock height of course, but who wants to stay there. I plan on getting coilovers when I come home so if I run a wheel that is 1" less, it should minimize any fender work. I'm already running a 255/35 tire and barely ever rub. You can see my pic and the tires are not extreme.....ie rubber bands And how many of us really track our car all the time to the point a 1 inch bigger wheel will hinder the car's performance or that will destroy our race/lap times? The car was designed and manufactured with 215/245 Fun Flats. And it's not like I'm trying to set record times at the 'Ring every weekend. A frew trips every now and then to the 1/4 mile dragstrip is fine for me. A 255/265 tires is plenty tire for a street car I think. |

The reason I am switching wheels is because the VMR V718's have not grown on me. I am already running a Falken Tire that runs skinny. There 255 is closer to a 245 I think. Although I am going with +40 (more aggressive) offset, the wheel will be 1" thinner. I just think a 9.5" wheel does not look/work right on our cars without extremely high offsets. |

Ivan, I believe the wheel offset determines the position of the tire, not the wheel width. It's true that a 9.5" wheel will stick out 0.5" more than an 8.5" wheel, but the wheel will be centered at the ET of the wheels.
I mention this because it appears that you are trying to reduce the ET by 5 in order to compensate for a 1" narrower wheel, but I don't believe that will do it. If you run the two wheel widths on a wheel/tire calculator with the same ET and same tires I think you will find that the tire is sitting in the same position. This has been my experience as well. I've been reading wheel/tire posts for 4 years on 1Addicts, and although I have high-offset Apex Arc-8 wheels with 275 width rear tires, it seems that a 48 ET is about as low as you can go without rubbing on stock sport suspension with a 255 width tire. Just my 2 cents... good luck. |

This Wheel/Tire fitment it shows that the tires fit the same on 8.5" v. 9.5" wheels with the same offset:

I find it awesome (really) that different people have such different thoughts on a particular post. If nothing else it makes this a worthwhile thread simply as a reminder that one has to decide certain things for themselves.
