Snow

My 128i was just totaled (T-Boned) so I picked up a 2013 135is and I need a wheel-snow tire package. The car came with 18" rims but I'm looking on Tire Rack at 17" wheels but its that offset that has me confused. How much of an offset do I need to clear the brakes on a 135is? The Anzio Turns I'm looking at have a 42mm offset. Anyone know if a 42mm offset is alright or do I need to go larger up to 45 mm?

Haven't really decided if I'm going to run this again this winter (I still have the tires/rims from last year stored) you just give up so much on a daily basis if it's not snowing a lot. The dry performance is horrible on snow tires, absolutely cannot handle torque or lateral G forces at all. Self-control mode engaged. I really think that driving on snow with summer tires can't be too much different than with snow tires. I'm probably wrong about that, but even with brand new snow tires on, it still felt very much like driving on snow. I never really got the feeling of "oh, THIS is why I sacrifice dry performance/feel for 4 months of the year!"

I was on absolutely stock suspension last winter, save for the tires, and by the time this coming winter rolls around, I will be on M rear bushings and M F/R control arms, Koni Yellow shocks, and Swift R springs, and I will have a better alignment as well. Any idea if the snow tires will function better on the new suspension than the old? Driving last season was absolutely painful with the snow/steel combination. Looked terrible too.
Blizzaks are pretty awful on my car as well, I have dunlop wintersports 3D on my saab and they are as good as an all season tire on pavment, but much better in snow imo.

I don't think I'll use a blizzaks on the bmw ever again

Which blizzak model were you using?

I think it was the ws60, it was fine in the snow for a while, but the tread didn't last long

dry handling wasn't very good either, will just go for the more "sporty" winter tires next time

The WS-60 tires are two generations old, IE they were in use commonly about ten years ago. Newer models have much better dry road feel, tread wear, and even better snow and ice traction.

I've read all the reviews on snow tires plus looked at a couple of videos of their performance. In all cases, the Michelin X‑Ice Xi3 out did all of the contenders.

My plans are to buy a set of used BMW 313 wheels and mount all around the Michelins in 225/40-18. The only downside is the Michelins are a bit more expensive.

Incidentally I currently have the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3s mounted which is an all season. It is a great tire under all conditions except snow or ice. Just a little bit of slickness and my car has a hard time getting off the mark.

I run MPSS in the summer and really wanted a great handling winter tire. I ruled out the Blizzaks and any other tire that had separated blocks on the outside edge because tires like that always slid sideways on dry pavement when pushed. That pretty much left me with the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3. Running a square set of 225/40-18 on Bremmerkraft BR9 wheels leaves me amazed each winter. I hardly miss the MPSS because this tire has fantastic grip like a great summer tire but in the cold and the rain. They may not be great in deep snow but they did get me started uphill on ice from a full stop. They are also quiet and have a plush ride. I can't recommend these highly enough as a winter performance tire.

I had the X-Ice on my car hated them. Got rid of them after one season.

Winter tire/wheel setup

The summer setup for my 08 328i e/w Sport Package is:
BMW Style 263 18 inch rims with Bridgestone Potenza Re050A runflats
215/40R18 front
245/35R18 rear

And here what I just purchased to run in the winter:
BMW Style 256 17 inch rims with Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 runflats
205/50R17 front and rear

Now you have to keep in mind that I live in Vancouver BC and we (usually) do not get much in the way of snow and I never take the car out onto the mountain roads. Just need something to get me around town when we do get the odd bit on snow.

I have included a picture which shows the summer wheels on the rear and the winter wheels on the front for comparison purposes.

I bought a used set of Style 55 16x7 and had them mounted with 205/55-16 Conti WinterContactSI. Minus sizing for winter helps a lot with mitigating pothole impact damage, and the narrower cross-section makes for better snow performance.

Hey guys. Picked up a nice low mile 135msport a few months back. I'm in the NY area so in need of some winter shoes. 135 is all stock with 215/40-18s and 245/35-18s with the 261 Style wheels.
Would this set up work on the stock rear wheels, just so I know before purchasing? I know the fronts will fit.
Rears are 235/40/R18
Fronts are 225/40/R18

Thanks.
