Hey. I have a weird problem. My star specs surface rubber layer is delaminating just below the triangle on the sidewall



It's happening in several places on the tire, and as you can see my triangle is intact so I'm not rolling the sidewall.

I'm really confused because it's happening on both of my star specs in seeral places.

Is this normal? I've never seen anything like it on any of my previous tires including my Dunlop winters.

Also the tires have about 3K miles on them.

if that's what it looks like so far, i wouldn't be worried. that looks like it's likely superficial. if you get any actual separation, you should call up dunlop and ask about warranty replacements.

You're not delam'ing, you're rubbing the outside edge on the inside edge of the fenders and it's "shaving" off a bit of rubber. Mine looked identical until I found the high spots and took care of them. SS are nice and square shouldered, which is why you didn't notice it on other tires. It will probably just shave itself down a hair and be done even if you don't do any rolling/trimming (and as fourtailpipes said, it looks only superficial), but there's some easy spots you can look into modifying. Is it the fronts, rears, or both? What size tires? Rims stock? Suspension setup?

Rubbing issues Matt?
I've seen this before on other tires when I had oversized wheels on a lowered E30 that rubbed the fender on dips.

I'm pretty sure that he is on stock suspension. Rubbing would be weird unless he was doing it under full compression.

I forget if its front or rear but BrokenVert is running oversized (wide) tires on his car. Also, knowing him as I do, his driving style could produce weird things like tire rubbing on stock suspension!

I should've mentioned it earlier but they're 245/40 R17 star specs on a 17x8 et40 OZ wheel in the front. I rub the plastic clip between the fender and front bumper on full compression dips, but it rubs on the tread, not on the sidewall. I'm also still on stock suspension. I'm At 61K miles, so I might aswell wait for my stock shocks to cook themselves before I replace them.

Ive been on edge with tires since I had a pirelli tire delaminate and blow out a month after I got it a few years back. So I'm a bit overcautious with them now.

And you do know me well frank, but it doesn't rub on turns, only on dips...no matter how much I try

Like others have said it is rubbing issue. It was happening on my rears exactly the same way if not more till I rolled the fenders. Nothing to worry about.

is it just the little "tags" hanging off your tire? if so, then yes it's definitely just rubbing. i thought you were indicating that there was a small crack/split forming behind what we can see.

Your tire is not delaminating and there is nothing you should be worried about. This could be a result from sidewall flex during hard cornering. Those thin pieces of rubber do not make a difference and were there from the mold release.
