AWESOME footage!!
Question though. Where are all the standard M-Bits in the interior that were mentioned in the press release? Esp the Alcantera headliner and M wheel and shifter? |

I really hate to throw a cold shower on this love-fest orgy, but as someone has intimated earlier, what you see in this video is not what you will get with the real car. The aspect ratio here is subtly distorted in a way that highly flatters the car, giving it a lower stance and a lower height relative to its length and width. These "distorted" dimensions are of course what BMW coulda-shoulda done with the actual car, but because they didn't, we get a WRX-like boxy pseudo-sedan instead.

Thanks Bryan. This car had me at hello. Every additional picture I look at or video I watch is just making the next 9 months that much more painful.
For those of you wondering about cup holders, your answer is in the video. You can see the plug-in orifice for the alien surgical instrument/cup holder on the console, just to the right of the shift lever. |

When I said the aspect ratio looked off, I didn't mean to imply that BMW or someone did it intentionally. There's no sound, so obviously a conversion has taken place along the way and the aspect ratio probably got changed slightly. It seemed when I watched it the first time (before it went down for a little while) it looked right, but afterwards the aspect ratio looked off. I'm still grateful that we got this (how I don't know) as it really provides some good dynamic shots and tons more detail of the interior. I agree with the other posters... it keeps on getting better and getting one is practically a done deal!

Video w/ sound, but mostly the still shots. Wait towards the end (55 secs remaining) to hear the engine and exhaust rev'ed.

Still Waiting for Decent Video
The YouTube video, though it has sound, doesn't look any better. I'm waiting to see the genuine 16:9 aspect ratio version. I would expect to see this at the German BMW web site already, but neither their News section nor TV program has any mention of this car. They're not really doing themselves a favor by allowing others to put out highly distorted videos.
Does anyone know where they filmed this? I suspect it could be Tijuana or Chile. It's not California or Australia, though. I was hoping, while they're at it, that they would also show the videos of H.J.Stuck doing a lap on the Nürburgring in this car. After all, the current TV programming features him and his son at the Nürburgring. The alleged weight of 1500 kg is bad news. This is on the heavy side and indicates they didn't bother to use aluminum for the exterior top horizontal surfaces. It remains to be seen if this car can do a lap on the Nordschleife at under 500 seconds, if only with the gas tank 20% full. Today's news (in German) cites the head of Daimler (Benz), probably a bit jealous, wanting to introduce a sporty compact car to compete with BMW. As far as Mercedes-Benz goes, they've been asleep at the wheel building boring and substandard crap for a long time. They have far too many models and have lost focus. Plus, try building a MB on their website. You have to add $15,000 in options to a C-class before you have a decent car. The only thing MB wants to do is build goofy looking impractical 2 seat wedges like the SLK. Mercedes-Benz thinks the answer to every sporting question ends by stuffing a 6.3L V8 under the hood. They desperately need a new perspective. |

Saving More Weight Should be Easily Possible
If the new coupé weighs 1500 kg, then that's slightly over 3300 lbs, 100 lbs. beyond what you were expecting. Moreover, it's 50 kg more than the 3-door 130i and 150 kg more than the Cayman S. The extra weight a hatchback has vs. a coupé ought to roughly compensate for the additional turbo equipment mass. The point remains that they could have used more aluminum but apparently didn't. Perhaps they can get the weight of the M model down to a more reasonable level. I'd be curious to know how much weight one can save by not getting a sunroof and forfeiting a premium sound system and navigation equipment. An excellent place to save weight is at the wheels. They ought to have some choices for 18" styles with low moments of inertia.

Remember, this car will be starting at ~34-35 USD with the N54, 6-piston brakes, and a sport suspension. Aluminum is expensive to use so it makes sense that is got the ax. |
