115,000 mile 1-series 135i Review
115,000 mile review
I bought my car with 25 miles back in April 08. I do a lot of highway driving here in South Florida. I have changed tires about 5x already. I haven’t had any major work done, the car has been taken well care of with all scheduled maintenance. The following maintenance was done: July 08 – 12383 miles – Run Flat replaced with new tire (tire warranty); engine oil service; ding on door (dent warranty); a/c filter replaced; idrive kept freezing on startup (software update). No charge October 08 – 24409 miles – Run flat replaced with new tire (tire warranty). No charge February 09 – 36583 miles – Engine oil service; standard scope. No Charge June 09 – 49971 miles – Engine oil service; brakes squealing (just in time for replacing all rotors and pads under warranty). No Charge October 09 – 61147 miles (out of warranty) – Standard scope 112.46; Vehicle Check 179.94; Oil Service and Filter 36.75 + 12.25 + 50 = $99; Repair order 14.62; Total 432.42 December 09 – 68595 miles – First HPFP failure; Vehicle Towed; High pressure pump replaced (recall warranty) No Charge. Standard scope 74.98; Brake Fluid Service 160.57; Repair Order 11.36; Total 262.96 February 2010 – 75564 miles – Second HPFP failure; High pressure pump replaced (recall warranty) No Charge. May 2010 – 82429 miles – Standard Scope 157.95; Oil Service 43.40 + 11.85 + 43.75 = $99; Repair Order 7.90; Total 282.07 November 2010 – 101328 miles – Standard Scope 78.98; Oil Service 14.70 + 7.08 + 58.17 = $79.95; Perform Intake Silencer 78.98 + 41.63 = 120.61; Replace Spark Plugs 236.93 + 213.12 = 450.05; Replace Rear Brakes 315.90 + 155.58 + 40.28 + 303.26 = 815.02; Total 1480.56 (Some discounts applied) January 2011 – 108924 miles – Seat Belt Pretensioner (No Charge); Third HPFP Failure – Replaced Fuel Pump (No Charge); Replace Low Pressure Pump and Programming 247.50 + 103.07 = 350.57; Repair Order 13.41. Total 385.81 (This last invoice had me fuming because of the low pressure pump which I thought it was under warranty with the high pressure fuel pump as well as the programming for it. Also I believe they weren’t performing recall work because last time I brought it in they said seat belt pret., was fixed.) Miscellaneous Charges (replaced front brake pads – out of dealer work done – BMW reputable shop $199) Overall the car has been running great. All work has been done at Braman BMW. I have been putting premium gas at all times, rarely do I put midgrade and never regular gas. The acceleration in the car is still outstanding with the steptronic. Switching it to manual just makes it more fun. My biggest complaint is the HPFP and cutting out in the middle of traffic, and the tires wearing unevenly. I have had alignment done several times already but now they say I have to change my shocks. Front tires got replaced first this time and then a few thousand miles later, I replaced the back tires. Once the tires wear the car gets really loud. Currently running on all four continental extremecontact dws. I recently found a leak under the car turned out to be the rack and pinion. It occasionally leaks but not so much. Dealer charging $1400. I took it to a shop they are charging $899. I am trying not to replace it yet as I will be getting a new car this summer. I still have fun with my 135 and still get compliments on the car. Everything is stock on the car other than the black kidney grills. Hoping to get my next BMW this year but probably will be heading up to Orlando to Fields BMW. |

I would've switched to a reputable indie shop the second I was out of warranty, but that's just me.
Also, I'm glad I got a 128i - three HPFP failures in three years? That's f***ing nuts. Sorry. |

Wow - a lot of miles. I have two years on mine and only 19K miles. It's my DD, but I'm only 10 miles from work. Good to know your car has held up so well.
How do you like your Conti's? I'm about to replace my second set of run-flats with non-run-flats and I've been eyeballing DW. I'm surprised your driving DWS (snow tires). Do you really need those in south Florida? Could that be one of the reason their you're car rides so loud? |

Interesting, my dealer keeps offering me the nitrogen option but i thought it was just a sales gimmick. Whats the advantage??

Nitrogen is not as susceptible to temperature-induced pressure changes; I think it's used in racing a lot for that reason.
Living in South Florida I don't know why you don't just run summer tires year round. Better dry and wet performance than all seasons - kind of perfect considering the only two seasons there are dry and wet. |

Did anyone notice that his car has averaged about 15,000 miles between oil changes? What happened to those folk who have been telling us that it must be done at 3~5k intervals or the motor will blow up, our teeth will rot and our hair will fall out?
OP, thanks for the report. Tom |

People don't trust BMWs OCC and they perform an oil change twice or thrice every 15K miles.

I see no reason to refuse to allow somebody to fill your tires with 100% nitrogen. I also see no reason to upgrade from 80% nitrogen to 100% if I have to pay more to get it.
There are benefits but none worth paying for. It will leak out a little slower, it will cause the tire to run a tiny tiny amount cooler. It may cause the "rubber" in the tire to degrade more slowly (who has seen a tire replaced for degradation from the inside out). Some tire places apparently buy bottles of very high pressure nitrogen and save wear and tear on the air compressor. If they can also get a few dollars from customers for the nitrogen, that is even better. Jim

BMW recommended oil change interval is for a stock car, if you add a piggy or a flash, you are probably better off changing the oil more often than the recommended 15k interval.

I will still continue to go with my 5K miles OCI's - thank you! It is not just that his motor is still running... but what it looks like on the inside and how much wear it has. Also how noisey it is. I still believe that the best oil is new oil. I would be interested in seeing IF his motor had any carbon buildup on the intake tract and valves. Thanks Op for your post. You def win the highest mileage contest here! Dackel |

If (for example) only 80% of the the air can be removed, then the resulting fill is only about 95% nitrogen (if my math is correct). Is that really superior to the 78% nitrogen in plain (and cheap) air? Just wondering... Tom |
