WTF, Egg in my engine bay! (Pics)
So after noticing that my hood wasn't properly aligned tonight from this thread, I went down to get a better look at it and make sure the insulation strip was down all the way.
Now here is where it gets weird. A couple of seconds after I opened my hood, I heard loud POP and saw there was white & yellow crap everywhere on and around the side of the engine next to the ECU. Turns out it was a cracked egg that some jackass somehow put in there. I have no clue how someone would be able to get a egg in there or why it would only crack now. I was able to hose most of it off, but some crap remained and it has been cooked from the heat of the engine. Needless to say it smells like ass when the AC is on and I'm hoping to take it to a professional cleaner somewhere tomorrow to have the engine bay thoroughly cleaned. Not a very good angle, but there is yolk all over the side & on the undercarriage cover. Maybe I can reach with a brush and scrub it at least the stuff on the engine myself.

how would someone get in there? i think it's more likely that a bird decided your engine bay was more enticing than a tree branch.
But was that really preventing the hood from closing all the way? How does it look now when closed? |

The way you described it makes it sound like someone THREW the egg in there AFTER you opened your hood....are you sure it didn't get thrown while you were not looking? You did say you HEARD a pop and then noticed the egg....

It had to have been thrown. Eggs don't just "Pop" and splatter everywhere like that. Even if it had been placed in there and then cracked, the splatter marks wouldn't look like that.
Strange. |

Crazy! I'm thinking maybe a bird left it there like JTdrivin1 mentioned? but that'd be pretty crazy too.
either way, hope you get that nasty smell out. Good luck!

Did you look up? What did you see on the inside of the hood? If the egg were already there it looks like it dropped down and/or fell coming from the left side of the engine bay as you are standing looking at it. Is there something like a nest up there somewhere? For the past week there have been a couple of Robins that keep trying to get into my raised basement area. The basement is half way into the ground, so not fully in the ground, and we have big picture windows that are about foot level from the outside. The birds have been continually trying to get into the big basement living room area, and this morning one kept hitting the window trying to get into the downstairs bedroom. They've never done this before. It's very strange. And, as far as strange things in a vehicle, the weirdest I've experienced was back in about 1995. I had a Yamaha cruiser motorcycle. It sat covered in the garage all winter. In the spring I took off the cover, went through an external inspection, opened all the fuel lines, and fired her up. It ran just fine. A few days later I did a full on spring cleaning and I removed the air filter to clean/replace it and what do I find?! The filter was half full of dog food! I kid you not. The intake side, pre-filtered air side, was half full of dog food. But, I don't have a dog let alone dog food. The nearest dog and it's food was the neighbor to my right who's garage was about 275-300 ft from mine. I had no neighbor on my right, or in the back. My house was 150ft from the main street. So, no other houses but his. I spoke with a bike mechanic who laughed when I told him. He had seen this before. Mice will make a nest and store food wherever they think it's safe. Apparently, a mouse was using my intake for a food storage area. He carried each piece of dog food from my neighbor and back again over, and over, and over, and over. There had to be over 60 pieces in there. Amazing. Last edited by RPM90; 05-14-2009 at 02:13 PM.. |
