Water Pump Blues
Well water pump crapped out on me this morning. 75K, modded for 25K. I guess I am lucky it lasted this long. I am BB flash + JB4 and I can say its really nice having the ability to quickly see water temps on the oil gauge. I was able to pull over, cool it off, and limp it home watching the water to keep it below 250F. I was concerned I had blown a head gasket or something at first (I used to drive/build turbo e36's and it was more common for some people). I got her home and test the water pump and it does nothing, except make a strange I have died noise.
Will be changing the pump/stat/hose this weekend. Probably change the oil in case it got hotter than normal. Anything else you guys think should be changed in the process? Anything easy to get to? |

I think it goes without saying that you should do the thermostat too.....you're going to have to pull it to pull the water pump as well.

Would you throw up some pics and a DIY? Could help a lot of people who will be in your situation in the future...

Ill be changing the water pump, thermostat, hose, and belt. Purchased the turner kit which includes all OEM parts for swap. Plan to replace coolant with 75% water, 25% coolant, + 2 cans of water wetter.
Best DIYs I found are here. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=784416 http://blog.bavauto.com/14581/bmw-ho...55-6-cylinder/ If I see anything unique or different than above I will post it up. |

Be sure you get the shortened water pump bolts in your kit or go to the dealer for them. They will be steel instead of aluminum and they will seat properly when bolting up the new pump (the latest version of the pump has no rubber insulators as discussed in the DIY, hence the need for shorter bolts). I don't have the BMW anti-freeze jug in front of me, but I think the max concentration for best anti-freeze/anti-boil performance was in the 60-ish percentile. There is a table on the back of the gallon jug. Good luck!

Ok guys all done. Really was not very hard. Took 4 hours. Followed bravarian diy. I'd say it easier than blasting your intake, but just barely, that took about 3 hours but required more tools. All in all cost about 4 hours and 600 bucks .
