Out of the last 4 new BMWs I've bought (since 1996), I followed BMW's break-in instructions to a T with 3 of them. The 4th, I only made it 200 miles before giving up, and not caring about the recommendations. That car went through a quart of oil every 3k-4k miles. The others never needed any oil, other than with oil changes.
That's my personal, non-scientific, 1st hand experience. |

I break my cars in hard. At the extreme I had my Type R Integra on an autox track within 1 week of buying it, temp tags and all. Ran it weekly all the rest of the season, and took it to a road course multiple times that first summer. I ran the heck out of that thing, and was rewarded with a VERY strong engine, which incidentally burned no appreciable amount of oil at all. Even on road circuits!
I don't keep cars for 200,000 miles, so for me, a little extra power is perhaps worth a little less life. YMMV, and all that |

I'll vary rpm's and kick it no higher than 3500-4k for about 1000 miles. That's a month's worth of driving for me. Shouldn't be too hard to wait.... then I'm taking it on a stretch of road I know and drive the hell out of it. BMW says don't change the oil until you get a 00000 readout on the dash, but I'll change it at 3,000. The other thing I won't do is wash it or wax it for a month or so (except to wipe bird s--- off) to let the paint cure ultra-hard. Some say that's overdoing it...I don't think so. |

Exactly the right way to do it. Easy on the clutch for about 1-1.5k miles. Cycle it: take it to 3k rpm, engine break to 1k, up to 4k, down to 2k, up to 5k, down to 3k, etc. If you can, find hills to engine break down and up. Show that motor where its new home is. However i am unsure as to how bmw breaks their motors in. So i don't know if seating the rings is necessary. I know Porsche has its own procedure. Engine builders say to break in with dino oil but Porsche does it with synthetic. It seems the conflict is with manufactures vs. engine builders. |
