N54 - fixed my wastegate rattle
Hopefully I’m not premature in saying this, but I think I took care of my rattle. At least for a while. I read how you should adjust the rod 2-2.5 turns but this seemed a bit arbitrary to me because the amount of slack varies depending on wear. So instead, I used a shortened (for clearance) 10mm wrench to break the nut loose, popped off the clevis from the wastegate arm and then held the wastegate in the closed position with a piece of long wire wrapped around the arm. Then I adjusted the clevis (4mm wrench for the rod not needed) until, in the fully closed position, the hole was about 2mm past the pin on the wastegate arm. I did this all by feel because it’s almost impossible to see with my hand over the parts trying to push the plunger in. This ensured that the wastegate closes fully just before (but not too far before) the actuator reaches its stroke limit. I took it for a long, spirited, drive through the German countryside and there was no more rattle, definitely more power, and no overboost codes.
