BMW key - Is it "BIG BROTHER"?
Just booked my car in for the first service. Service guy asks for my key. As I had walked to the dealer I did not have it on me. Oh, thats ok, we can get the info later. Er...What info?
What data does the key and or ECU store? Could it be accessed by say the police, insurance co etc?

I'm 99% certain it stores peak speed, revs etc..... I know when I had the MINI I once had a service adviser mention that it "looked like i'd had some fun".

That is just what the Bluetooth/BMW Assist is, big brother...
Yes they are able to shut down the car w/the key remotely, but I'm damn sure it is not legal to do so, here in the US. |

I can confirm the key stores peak speed, avg fuel cons., all fluid levels and any info displayed in your dash (hence fuel cons., avg. speed, peak speed etc).

How does this work with CA? Does it upload to the car via wireless or some such?

I had no idea this was the case.
I would have thought the National Privacy Principles would require BMW to notify us of the collection of our personal information and how it's used, opt outs etc. |

I have comfort access and I never put my key in the slot. I am assuming it writes to the key in real time. I guess I'm screwed if it saves the data and just writes it all to the key when you eventually put it in the car.
I have heard that in some cases the police have attempted to get access to the information stored by the car so they can get a better idea what was happening just before a car was involved in an accident. I suspect eventually the police will have access to this data when investigating an accident. Sigh.....

Beware our cars can be used as evidence against us in an accident. It will permanetly display the crash speed of the car on the speedo in an accident which deploys the airbags.
Its a quick way for the cops to check if you were speeding. So Im not suprise if the keys hold other vital information as well. BTW this is what I have read on another BMW forum. |

It is actually quite creepy, and in the future might sway me away from BMW alltogether, my father drives an X5, and he had me drop it off at the dealer for a service, and as soon as the SA put the fob into the slot at his desk, he was able to tell me that the previous trip in the X5 was 5 kilometers at 105 KPH, im assuming the fob in my 128i will provide the same info. So basically our own vehicles will rat us out in case of accident, and im sure eventually police will be able to access the info for whatever means they need.
Who knows maybe it will come to be used for instances where one may be suspected of speeding, and its an easy enough way to dole out tickets for previous throttle indiscretions.Makes me miss the old days.

SO even if you have CA or haven't even used that key, all the Service guy does it put the key in your slot once you're out the door and bango - there's all the info they need. Having CA and never putting your key in the slot doesn't matter. Never using a key and giving it to them doesn't matter. They simply put the key in the slot, then they have all the data. |
