Replacement tail light

This morning I was horrified to discover someone has tried to relieve me of one of my tail lights... the long thin one above the number plate.

I assume it's the work of someone else and not just a break in the plastic, given that both sides of the light have been snapped.

Can any one suggests a good place or website to get a replacement?? Or should I just get BMW to sort it on the next service which is coming up shortly??

There is a TSB that covers this. Bring it back to the dealer.

dtwyim, I doubt that a Service Bulletin exists for some asshole trying to rip off his tail light. I'm sure you're thinking of the one where it cracks around the screws and falls off of its own accord.

PS: Gazmoses, sorry to hear of your misfortune. I'd get a price from your dealer, but prepare to be shocked. If so, then go the OEM route, I am sure others can give you links quickly.

I don't know. If you look closely there are no tell tale scratches or marks from someone trying to pry it off. It still could be warranty work. The problem was that there was too much pressure on the brake light causing it to crack or snap in places. To me that looks like as if you had 2 screws holding the light in which has been overtightened and causing the plastic to bend or give way at those pressure points. It will certainly not hurt to take it in as dealers are always keen to get paid from warranty work esp if there is a manufacturing defect on the brake light which is well documented.

+1

Can totally be covered by warranty. I'm more inclined to think that this was caused by the central screw exerting too much pressure and causing the ends to pop out (probably exacerbated by the current cold temperatures)

Thanks guys, you're right doesn't seem to be any other scratches indicating it was jimmied, just didn't think there'd be enough pressure to snap the other side.

Will definitely check with the dealer first.

Be oblivious and tell them it became like that when you woke up

Welcome to the forum, mate

Good to see a few more '23d drivers popping up, it's a great little engine IMO.

Hello

Hi all

I am new here to this forum.
I have the same problem with this taillight but I have replaced it once under warranty and it breaks again.

Have to go back to dealer for them to investigate. The problem is everytime when I try to close my boot I cannot close it gently, got to slam a little harder to close the boot.

I had mine replaced about a year ago and its a common issue among most 1 coupes. Since replacement then I havent been closing my boot gently, - not forcefully too but everything is fine.

Maybe the new batch of replaced lights are slightly tougher?

I had to replace mine due to a boot mounted bike carrier/bike pedal related incident.

Got one delivered for about $80 or so from www.getbmwparts.com:

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...layCatalogid=0

Very easy to install, took about 15 minutes with a socket wrench.

Just came abck from the dealer today, on my second tailight now.

The other problem related to the cracking is the locking latch.

In the past, used to have to slam abit harder to close the boot as they generally cause the tailight to crack eventually.

They modify my locking latch and now i just tap it softly and it close smoothly.

Thought to share this with everyone.
