Moving to another continent will aleviate your dilemma, however, some around here might consider that an act of unreasonable desperation, subsequently, mercilessly ridiculing you for changing location. Then, there's always purchasing clears from an aftermarket vendor.:biggrin:

There were some used Euro headlights on eBay earlier this week. Euro headlights will never be available from OEM sources in North America, as they are not legal in the US. Any company who attempts to sell you some could be subject to huge fines.
If you want the Euro headlights you will have to find some on eBay or import them yourself from a BMW dealer in Europe. Although they are legal in Canada, it is doubtful that any Canadian Dealer could order them for you as an option. They might be convinced to bring the parts in from Germany and install them for you, leaving your old ones in the trunk for you to dispose of as you wish. The F.O. price for that would probably be around $4,000. There is a DIY post from a member in Calgary who went to the trouble and expense to install Euro headlights. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...uro+Headlights |

Canada and US Regulations insist on Amber reflectors. However, Canada allows Euro headlights under a waiver. There is no option on the 1 series to order clear reflectors (Euro Headlights) for North America.

Please post the part number and the BMW list price. If you want your dealer to install them - add about 4 hours of labour rate at $175 per hour plus taxes - are we getting close to $4k?

Looks like these guys got it covered, unfortunately DOT regulations require an amber reflector up front. For some reason, BMW chose to integrate it into the headlight rather than the bumper like on the new E90s and E92s.

Amber is orange. There is only one choice in North America. In some pictures - it will look more orange than in other pictures, depending on the camera, the light etc.

There are two light assemblies available. One for North America, where the regulations require Amber reflectors. Another one for Europe and rest of world (available in LHD and RHD versions), where clear reflectors are standard. The European ones are about $1,200 each. They are legal as a substitution in Canada but not the USA. There have been many, many people who have suggested that they can break apart, remove, or melt the amber reflectors - but I have not read where anyone has actually done this on a 1 series yet. The only option would be to use the covers - which most people don't like - or to buy some Euro headlights - as a couple of people have done. Personally - I like the Amber, especially on a dark colored car. I think a lot of other peole do as well, but are staying silent on the matter so as not to feel the peer group pressure. Each to their own. |

just to be clear, there's a lot of confusion on this on various forums
the US regulations do not require a reflector IN the light, the manufacturer can put it anywhere on the front corner, I'm not sure of the exact placement rules, ie on the bumper like a bunch of other cars is just fine, that's why we see many cars with clear corners, but also having a amber reflector attached near the front corner. I'm sure someone thought it looked better in the light, than stuck to the fender

"just to be clear" pun intended? :-) You are correct. But where to find a reflector that meets the specs? It has to be visible from the front and the sides. |

This seems like the most straight-forward method of obtaining Euro headlights. Anyone else try this?
