Ultra-portable car jack
I've been casually looking for a small portable jack to keep in the trunk, to be used only for emergencies (so 1.5-2 ton should be sufficient). The idea is to find something relatively inexpensive but as light & small as possible to maybe fit somewhere nicely in the boot, maybe even under the bottom trunk cover.
Haven't had much luck other than the cheap Chinese units (ATD TOOLS 7462, Pro-Lift T-9456) and BMW oem kit (71102182448) that is a bit expensive. Anyone run across anything? |

With no spare tire in the trunk, there are limitations on what one can accomplish

I have the BMW OE jack its small enough to fit on the shelf next to the battery compartment along with a compressor and other various things. Truth be told I also carry a spare most of the time.

I carry the OE jack as well. It will do in an emergency (very nice case, packs down to nothing).

It fits right in perfect! I was amazed, it's like it was made for a 1er! I didn't have my floor jack and had the c300 with me and figured well I'll check and see what it's jack looks like and worked perfectly! And it was rather fast!

Everybody is entitled to their own way of dealing with the lack of a spare but I'm not sure what the jack does for you. I guess it might be easier to find the leak if you had the wheel off but that requires something for the lug nuts. I have an extendable ratchet that will take lug nuts off if tightened properly but no jack. My main defense for flats is my Viair 70P compressor. I also carry a plugging kit. And a AAA card. All my flats in over 40 years except for one on a trailer were slow leaks a compressor is an effective temporary solution for. The plugging kit adds little weight or bulk and provides a little additional margin. I used it successfully on my other vehicle, a SUV, but not on the bimmer so far. I happened to be staring at the nail in the tire while airing it up and decided to try out the plugging kit. But normally I would just air it up and take it to the tire place. They install plugs from the inside and I would rather have them than the ones you can install from outside. They also can inspect the tire for damage when they have it dismounted.

You got it Jim. I was carrying a small compressor plus a plug kit in my Elise. In this case I wanted to augment it with a jack to plug the tire on the road. I had a couple of rims scratched up pretty badly by morons with tools when they tried plugging from the inside. If I'm away from my local shop - I'd rather do my own plug. So yes, it would just be easier to see where the screw/nail is with the wheel off.

Depending on where you live and the age/warranty status of your vehicle, it might be worth paying the extra 30 or 40 bucks to get the "Plus" version of AAA, which enables towing up to 150 miles if I remember correctly. I have that, and with my 4, spareless BMWs, it seems like a bargain, although I have yet to use it.

Dude!!! Major props man, just got C300 jack (the whole kit actually) in today - it fits like it meant to be there!!! Jack arm fits PERFECTLY into the plastic receptor sockets under the car as well. Even the the lugnut wrench (17mm) fits
The kit I got came in the OEM Mercedes holder/carrier, might mod it later on to keep everything in it, would need to cut down plastic stand-offs on the bottom to make it flush, but that's just over the top gravy, not necessary. And so ladies and gemtlemen, this calls for a toast and stickie |
