The topic of conversation with most people now is about my bmw

Since people found out I ordered my car, that seems to be what they're all talking about. I don't mind it, it's just an observation. I just noticed that much of my conversation at work and with friends begins with the BMW as the ice breaker now. Especially since I did ED. Most people ask if my car got there yet, or how much longer.

I guess once you get a BMW, people see you as "the guy with the bimmer".

60-70% of my friends drive BMWs so it's always a good topic of conversation.

Yea it's actually kind of funny that way... There is this stigma around a BMW as being a real expensive car, and "how can you afford?" and "What are they paying you!?" kind of body language responses I get when people find out.. Thing is that my BMW is only slightly more expensive and definately less in the payment department (since I'm leasing) then most of the big SUVs in the lot.

i also find people greatly confused about the cars. mainly, my girlfriend. there is this shitty restaurant right by my house and the owner has a bare-bone, completely stock steel blue E46 325i. after we talked how shitty that place is, she said "well, they must be doing pretty good since the owner has a nice BMW," completely disregarding the fact she just got out of my bimmer that is like twice as expensive as that E46...people have no idea.

I found that car lovers at work like to talk with me about my car, especially the ones who were curious about the new e90. I try not to bring it up before being asked, as people tend to think one is bragging, especially those who don't realize that my e90 costs about the same as their SUV. When they hear "BMW", they assume I'm blowing lots of money on it. Ever talk with someone who went to school at Harvard?

"Where'd you go to school?"
"Oh, I went to school in Boston."

Then there was the guy who owns a few BMW's. He was talking with someone else and I was just mentioning that my car was on order.
"3 series?"
"Yeah"
He grunted and went back to his discussion about his racing and his neighbor's Mercedes.

I remember one day I was talking with my coworker about E90. He has E46 and we were just talikng about 3 series. Then f*cking managers comes up and hears what we are talking about, he thought that I am dreaming of getting E90. Later on when he found out that I already have my E90 his attitude toward me changed in a bad way. He is jealous, because he makes like $6k month and drives old explorer. And I make minimum wage and drive an 06 Bimmer! :rocks:

I don't like the no-class jerk who's first question on everything is "How much did you pay for it?"
I usually say, "I'm trying to forget."

He saw my bmw in the garage and was completly shitting himself. He was like "daaaaaaaamn, thats sweet. What kind is it? The new 5 series?" I said "Um, no its a 325". He said "Shit, thats nice. How much you paid for it? $75,000?" I was like wtf! I said "no it was about 1/2 that". He couldnt believe it. Hes like what?? I thought all Bmw are like $60K+. I said no... (idiot)....

The classic "How much are they paying you?" or "Don't you have student loans, I don't get it"

Etc.

I told a friend that I got a BMW.

All she said was "I like Jaguars".

She drives a jeep.

So in other words, you're living off of your parents or somebody else while he actually pays his own bills.

6k/month is more than enough to afford a 3 series and a very, very comfortable living, especially if you're single or don't have any life suckers (kids). I doubt he's actually jealous of you. Probably just doesn't respect you anymore.

I would react the same way, though for different reasons. I just get annoyed by people talking about their entry-level car like it's something to be impressed with. Especially when it's probably a lease or was bought and paid for by somebody else.

06E90Rostik, this picture seems incomplete. How does one afford a new car, even a Kia Rio strip down, while making the federally mandated minimum wage? I am definitely missing something unless the minimum wage is calculated differently in CA than in the United States. <g> I don't suppose Daddy bought the E 90 for you?

SUV vs. BMW

Yes that's a common thing that people forget -- you can buy a BMW for $32k or a Chevy/GMC/Ford/Lincoln SUV for $45-50k. And don't forget minivans -- the Chrysler TC is around $36k well equipped, and the beloved Honda Odyssey can get into the mid 30s easily.

Of course, these vehicles have a lot more interior space than the E90. So it's a difference in either need or values. Just like you can buy an apartment in the city or a big house in the burbs for the same price.

This happens to me whenever I meet new people. I get the question "How you can afford it?" a lot since I am 23 and just graduated college.

I had someone tell me they thought my car cost around $70K. Even in CDN dollars that's still almost double what it actually cost.

At least you know BMW is doing a good job maintaining the high end brand recognition.

Haha.. I know what you mean. Sometimes I don't mind. For example if it's someone who is in the market and has a legitimate interest. When someone's asking just to be nosy, I tell them they can look it up on the internet.
