Unhappy How do I repair this damage?

Hi all,

I've recently noticed that my clear coat is starting to peel off, possibly due to hot weather in LA or small rock hitting the car while driving at high speeds or some reason unknown to me.

How do I repair and anyone have an approximate cost to fix?

Thanks in advance!

Almost looks like a piece of body filler fell out. Has that panel been repaired before??

The whole door would have to be resprayed.

+1. Plus the panels next to the door will need to be blended.

IF your car was not painted while in your hands... perhaps the car was painted before you took delivery, like while in shipping transit to the dealer or while the dealer had it on the lot. Sometimes if the repair was cheap... the dealer or BMW might not need to disclosed this fact to you. I think only when the repair is more than 6% of the value of the car. But I think that varies state by state.

You will need a new paint job, sorry buddy.

Thanks for your comments guys. So..now my next question is..how much would it cost to repaint that panel?

Or have any cheaper suggestions (perhaps covering with a decal sticker?)

Model is 2008 128i

I've got smaller ones of those on my hood.. I figured i'll just live with it. Though its really noticeable on AW. I would say leave it alone unless it really really bothers you. Could probably even be hit with a little touch up paint to make it less obvious.

The cheapest repair would be a "smart repair" where a guy paints the damaged area with a micro airbrush. These guys come to you in a van.

Or you could have a body shop repair and repaint the door(and surrounding areas). I would have a few estimates done. I bet it would be under $1K to repaint that door.

That's what I'd do... To keep it from possibly spreading and getting worse.

Where may I buy some touch-up paint? Any specific instructions on how to apply it?

I had a piece of flying debris from an overloaded pick up truck on the highway hit my other car- MazdaSpeed 3- put a dent in the rear quarter panel. The dent was too big and there was crinkled paint, could not use PDR- had to have the dent pulled, filled and the entire quarter panel re-painted and clear coated- blending the door and rear roof pillars. I found a really good local body shop to do the work. The owner did a great job- did the work him self, took 2 days, said he was fussy. It came out great.......the cost $450.00.

i had the same thing

I, too, had one of those from a couple rocks that flew off of a truck on the highway. Two hit the windshield and cracked it to the point of replacement while the third hit the side of the car just like yours.

While mine wasn't quite as large, it did take off the paint just like that. I opted for the temp and not exact fix which was to simply clean it and treat it with touch-up paint. Unless you are looking for it you won't even notice it, plus with all the freeway driving I do on a daily basis I figured that if I respray the whole door, Murphy almost guarantees that it would happen again within the week or some a-hole would get me in a parking lot regardless of how carefully you park.

I'm a huge proponent of keeping your car always looking in tip top condition but for me the price is too big to put all that money into something that you can't control from happening again.

Good luck either way you decide to go!

Find out your color code and check out places like Amazon and eBay... Don't buy it from the dealer unless you wanna get reamed.

Dude don't even both, touch-up paint will just make it worse and more noticeable. Hire a pro and get it done right.

Back in the day we use to use clear nail-polish as a temp fix to keep it from spreading and getting worse. Always worth a shot until you can respray the entire door...(flame suit on for suggesting a cheap fix on the bimmer).

You can get touch up paint from Dr Color Chip. I have bought from them before and gotten a perfect matches. I do agree that it would be cheaper to call someone in your area that does paint touch ups. I have a friend that does it here and when he is done you cant tell it was damaged. He said the trick is to blend the paint then clear and after the clear he srayed it with like a solvent and it even blended out the edges of the over sray to the point that you couldnt see or feel them. A good waxing later and all i said was what chip...

The damage got worse over this weekend. Any locals in LA know of any shops that can do a repair for a reasonable price?

Why do people say paint the door when the damage is in the panel behind it?
